Re: [BlindHandyMan] Eating crow.

2007-06-09 Thread Max Robinson
The telephone was always thought of as a one person device. The patented
magnetic recorder was, believe it or not, an answering machine. The
necessity for a group of people to listen to the same thing at the same time
came about with the marketing of the radio in the 1920s. The first loud
speakers were phonograph horns attached to a larger than usual telephone
receiver. You had it right but it took a while.

Well boys and girls it's time for me to eat some crow. A Google
search on
Valdemar Poulsen turned up the following web site.

http://www.amps.net/newsletters/issue27/27_poulsen.htm
<http://www.amps.net/newsletters/issue27/27_poulsen.htm>

Valdemar Poulsen is the person who was named in the article Ray
posted about
sound recording. It seems that old Valdemar did invent magnetic
recording.
He actually did it in 1898 rather than 1887 as the article said.
He was
only 18 years old in 1887. He did use telephone technology as I
suspected
but the playback did produce a strong enough signal to be heard
in a
telephone receiver. Magnetic recording without tubes. Amazing.
