RE: [BlindHandyMan] Gas lamp problem
We have two gas-fired lamps or lanterns on posts at the front of our property. Occasionally, as happened yesterday or so, the wing gets just right, and blows through the touch hold or whatever you call it and extinguishes the flames. The hole I mention, is maybe a half inch in diameter, and you have to stick a match or whatever through that to ignite the gas. There's no thermocoupler or anything like that, the gas just flows. Anyway, I can't for the life of me get a kitchen match to stay lit while fumbling it into this hole. The wind doesn't seem to be an issue at this momen. I have an idea I could make something out of three kitchen matches wrapped in nychrome (sp) wire and hooked to a battery, but I don't really want to do that. Does anyone know of a device, say something like one of those battery-powered units you see on gas grills that I can buy to use for this? Thanks in advance for any ideas. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Gas lamp problem
Exactly, why not one of those long nosed gas lighters? Way back when the mountains were still cooling we used to have a battery powered gas lighter. They were common in England at the time for lighting your gas oven or grill or cook top burners. Again it was nothing more than a long stem with a jar like bottom which threaded down over a specially designed battery. There was a little glow element at the end and you just pushed it into the gas stream and held down a little button until the gas went Pouf! Haven't seen them on this side of the pond though. Anyway, the barbecue lighter will work just fine. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Gas lamp problem
The BBQ lighters I have use a pisoelectric device and a butane stream. There is a little device to increase the flow of gas for a larger flame. You use a thumb to hold a control open which starts and sustains the gas flow and you squeeze the trigger which ignites the gas. You can light the gas then poke the end about six inches long I guess into the hole. The igniter on my BBQ has been dead for years now. Sometimes I end up extinguishing the flame as I poke it through the hole in the base of the BBQ so now I poke it in there, start the gas to the grill then ignite the spark and fuel of the lighter. You too may find that easier, shove it into the lamp then ignite the lighter. The electric ones we used to have in England were just a little glow element. You could even buy replacement ones which screwed into the end of the stem like a little flash light bulb sort of thing or as the British would say, a torch. I haven't seen anything like that since returning to canada though and I rather doubt you will find one. The butane lighters though are only a couple of bucks. I have two laying around here. My wife gets angry if she catches me using a soldering torch . When I was a smoker it used to really get her if she caught me lighting cigarettes with the torch or the toaster or the kitchen range or the BBQ lighter. I didn't have a welding torch to use, any port in a storm though Dale Leavens, Cochrane Ontario Canada [EMAIL PROTECTED] Skype DaleLeavens Come and meet Aurora, Nakita and Nanook at our polar bear habitat. - Original Message - From: William Stephan [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2007 12:33 PM Subject: RE: [BlindHandyMan] Gas lamp problem Dale, I guess a trip to the hardware store is in the works. One more thing about the gas lantern problem; would it be helpful to form a inverted cup and attach that to the lanterns to shield the match opening from the wind. Well, I bought the lighter, it's pretty cool actually. I know that one of the Lamps was lit and one was not, I tried lighting the one that was out, but I can't really tell if it's burning or not. These are essentially 12 inch kitchen matches with the wooden matchstick. They can be purchased at any hardware store that sells fireplace supplies or possibly -- well, likely -- on the internet. 2) A charcoal lighter (a special lighter, not the fluid) can be bought at any place where you buy charcoal and barbecue supplies. This is essentially a very long Bic lighter although I can't say if Bic is the actual manufacturer. RE: [BlindHandyMan] Gas lamp problem
please don't take this as sarcastic; but how about a twig? How about 3 or 4 matches secured in a pair of long tweezers? Stagger the heads of 3 and 4 so they light later down the wood and give you renewed ignition. How about one of those long nozzled candle lighting devices? They take fluid like an older lighter, and have an anteater nose? On Sat, 24 Feb 2007, William Stephan wrote: We have two gas-fired lamps or lanterns on posts at the front of our property.
