There isn't a good way to keep these straight. I have a rough idea in my head
what straight looks like and try to get the nail as close to that as possible.
Then I put the barrel over the nail and start pounding.
You could use a pair of vise grips, or I like lineman pliers because of the
large flat jaws. This would give you an idea of straight but you can't hold
the nail very tight in order to drive it. Also the handles have to stay off
the edge of the wood or you won't be straight.
Until you get comfortable with the nailer, remember to keep light pressure on
the back of the nailer. It takes very little pressure to make it work, and the
harder you press the harder and faster it will go. And that usually means the
more and faster it will bend the nail.
As a last resort, you can start the nail with a regular hammer and make sure
the nail is straight. Then finish off with the nailer. Extra work I know but
you have to hunt for solutions in the beginning.

Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Keeping hand straight when driving nails
Hi again all,
I asked the following question the other day in the wrong way and did
not make myself clear.
When using my palm nailer driving any size nail. How do you keep your
hand straight? I find as I press down on the nailer I must slightly be
on an angle as I often bend the nail I am trying to drive or at least
drive it in on an angle.
thanks for any guidance on this one.
Max.
