Hey I also have a Hot Point microwave that worked for a real long time and when
I plug it up, it will do nothing. I haven't plugged it up for a while, because
I am thinking that may this could just be a fuse. I wish I could get it fixed
because I have Braille on it which provided by the company.

Then its not the fuse, and would say its the part that does all the
work, can't think of the name right now, but it would probably cost
you more to replace it then buy new. Because it has to be calibrated
on install, and I don't think anyone has the tools for that one.

The last two screws had the star head, but also had a center circle
so it look like the rest but wasn't. So i scraped the unit and got a
new one. As cheap as these are not a problem.

2008-05-13 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Tim,

You shouldn't have any rivets to remove to remove the outer housing of a
microwave, otherwise it wouldn't be financially feasible to do all that work
to drill out the rivets, then re-attach new ones once the unit was fixed.

On top of that, you may damage the unit further if the drill you're using to
drill out the rivets goes in too far, or something like that.

I think that the rivets you saw might have been holding something else
within the unit that needed to be there.

Without looking at it, I couldn't tell you what that is, so I won't
speculate, but I can tell you, with some reasonable assurances, that rivets
would not be holding the housing onto the unit.

Jennifer, usually it is behind the control panel, the outer shell of the
microwave needs to be removed. All power needs to be disconnected and it can't
be operated till the cover is put back on due to radiation emissions.

you have to remove 6 star head cap screws on the back to remove the
outer housing. I tried with mine and two of them was riveted in, so
no go with the tools I got in house.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Re: microwave fixable?

2008-05-12 Thread Victor Gouveia
Hi Jennifer,

Look for a panel, usually held to the microwave by a single screw, possibly
two, either on the outside, closest to the controls, or, inside.

Either way, this panel will screw up and provide you access to the microwave
fuse to facilitate easy removal and replacement of the fuse when it blows.

Worse case scenario, you'll have to remove the entire housing cover, which,
obviously, has more screws involved, but still easy nonetheless.

Remember to unplug the thing, as you can get a nasty surprise if you touch
anywhere within that microwave where current flows, I know, I've done it.
Smile.

Look for a cylindrical object, about an inch long, and I guess you can
describe it as a capital I.

The ends will have metal caps to them, and the middle will be made of some
type of clear substance, possibly glass, or fibre glass.

This will be the fuse, and it's the only one in there, so pull it out, and,
if you have the manual, take it and the fuse along with you to the hardware
store, or where ever you intend on purchasing the microwave fuse from, and
let them look for the fuse number so they can give you the right fuse.

I can't remember whether you said your husband was sighted or not, but if he
is, he can look up that information in the manual. If he's blind, like I
said, unless you've got the manual in digital format, you'll have to take it
along with you to the store.

Once back with the new fuse, it really doesn't matter which end is up with
the fuse, you just snap it into place, place and screw the cover back on,
and plug it in.

If I'm not mistaken you should be able to see whether you've installed the
fuse properly or not, as the microwave will not talk otherwise.

Hope you get it fixed.
