[BlindHandyMan] Which way to lay?

2007-02-04 Thread Dan Rossi
OK,

I know that all guidelines for laying wood floors say to run the boards
perpendicular to the joists. That makes some sense sure.

Having said that, I am laying this floor over an existing plank floor.
The planks obviously run perpendicular to the joists. If I run my new
floor perpendicular to the joists, IE parallel to the existing planks, it
seems like there might be trouble in paradise. These planks aren't in the
best condition and some are cupped a bit. I can imagine I would get a
wavy effect if I run my boards parallel to the planks.

Would running my boards perpendicular to the planks, IE parallel to the
joists just be a horror of horrors with handyman demons cursing me and
taking my hammer and saws away from me?

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Which way to lay?

2007-02-04 Thread clifford
Dear Dan:
I would suggest replacing any boards that are cupped, unless that would be
impractical. Another possible help might be to put down a thin sheet of
plywood or other sub-flooring before installing the hardwood flooring. In
order to keep the flooring in place, I do think you should stick to the plan
where the hardwood planks are being nailed in to the joists, so crossing them
at ninety degrees makes sense.

Yours Truly,

Clifford Wilson

PS If you find a joint in the sub-flooring that is moving when stepped on, make
sure and screw it down tight and some glue in the joint might help as well.

2007-02-04 Thread Dale Leavens
No problem!

Generally the appearance is better if the surface flooring runs in the long
direction of the room what ever the underlying joist structure turn out to
be. If you do go the direction of the cupped and crowned old planks though I
would really recommend that plywood and probably with the paper on both
sides. Even if going across the planks you will have voids under the
flooring in places and this will result in noise and movement.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Which way to lay?

2007-02-04 Thread R & S Enterprises
Well in the old days the good carpenters laid the sub floor at a 45 degree
angle. This supposedly helped brace the joists and the biggest reason is so
they could lay the finish flooring, usually short oak, eight direction. With
some of those short boards trying to hit a joist was definately a hit or miss
deal. The nailing of the finish floor was done entirely into the subfloor.
Many of those boards were too short to span the distance between joists.
Anyway to your problem. Unless you put in another layer of plywood you have
only the choise of laying at right angles to the subfloor flooring. First see
if you can use some screws to pull some of the cupped boards down tighter. A
couple of screws about a inch and a half apart and tighten alternatly can do
wonders. Once you have "sucked" all of them down you can get you might hit the
high points with a real coarse belt sander or a hand plane.. Voids under the
finish floor "ain't" good. They ain't squeaky clean just squeaky
Remember the felt paper over the sub floor and clean, clean, clean the subfloor
of debries.
Ron.

Maybe you should consider gluing and nailing a good plywood underlayment before
you install the hardwood.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Which way to lay?

2007-02-05 Thread Dan Rossi
Thanks for all the input on laying my floor. I think I will definitely
consider laying a 1/4 inch subfloor over the pine planks. I'll use
possibly two layers of rosin paper below the 1/4 and one layer above it.
After thinking about it, nails would have to be pretty freakin long to go
through half inch of floor, 1/4 inch of subfloor, another inch of pine
plank and into a joist, all at a 45 degree angle. Not to mention the fact
that if the nails were long enough to do that, in the very many places
where they would not be in a joist, they would be sticking through the
pine planks in the joist bays in the basement, making them even scarier
than they are now.

If we were doing the living room and dining room, we would probably lay
the boards perpendicular to the joists since the length of the room would
flow in that direction. But since we are only doing the living room, the
long side of the room is perpendicular to that.

Thanks for all the input to think about.
