[BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
I have a 100 pound Propane tank outside the house. I have three Propane appliances that run off that tank. They are an ordinary cook stove, an ordinary double oven, and a Propane space heater. The stove and oven burn perfectly cleanly, no smell, nothing, just heat. The space heater gives off smoke, it stinks, and the walls all around the living room where the heater is are darkened about ten feet off the floor. Why do the stove and oven burn so cleanly and the heater so dirty? I know I'm supposed to clean the heater every year. Why is it that I never have to clean the stove or the oven? Thanks. Jerry
Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
Good question Jerry! And since you asked, I am wondering why my garage natural gas heater smells strongly like gas when operating. The unit is only a few years old, and I clean it out frequently, but I am now getting the gas smell when it's burning. - Original Message - From: Jerry Richer To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 4:19 PM Subject: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty? Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
Is there an adjustment for air. I remember years ago my uncle had a gas fireplace. At the time no one liked it because the flames were an unnatural blue for a wood simulated fire. When he changed the amount of air the flames turned to yellow but produced smoke and an odor. If I remember correctly gas has to burn blue when clean. Now that was quite a few years ago and he long since moved from that home. - Original Message - From: "Rick Hume" To: Sent: Monday, February 01, 2010 4:44 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty? Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
Two thoughts. One a heater burns more hours than a oven or cook top. Two. Most heaters have a higher B T U rating, therefore likely have larger burners, consuming more gas, therefore more exhaust gas for lack of a better term. Exhaust gas also contains solid particles, not just gas. That is why furnaces and heating stoves are usually vented to the outside. Unvented heaters also may be needing more oxygen, with larger burners and if the house is tight it isn't getting enough and then isn't burning clean as it would with sufficient air intake. There may be other reasons, but these seem the most logical to me. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
also i have a cook stove that is burning propane. but when we first got it it smelled kind of strange and made lots of soot. we called and the man came out and checked it out and told us that it was set wrong. there is an orifice that can be turned one way for natural gas and the other way for propane. ours was set right in the middle. he said he would have never believed it if he didn't see it. he put it the right way and it has worked fine ever sense. so maybe your heater is made or set to run on natural gas and someone hooked it up wrong. i would have it checked. I don't like the sound of that one little bit! Burning propane exhausts carbon monoxide. Of course you can see your muck, you don't see or smell carbon monoxide. Is this unit vented outside? Sounds like both of these heaters need to have the fuel air mixture adjusted. It's not a job for someone who doesn't know what they are doing. Regards. Max. K 4 O D S. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
The simple natural gas and propane burners usually have a screw to adjust the gas air mixture. A repairman will adjust the screw for the best color of the flame. A standard gas or propane furnace requires adjustment once a year. The burner area also needs vacuuming once a year. No adjustment available on high efficiency furnaces. Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
Did you buy this heater new? Has it been burning dirty since new? If so, I too think you should check the orifice. Could be that the orifice installed is for natural gas which is largerthan that used for propane. If so, this could cause the soot and smell you describe. - Original Message - From: RJ To: blindhandyman@yahoogroups.com Sent: Tuesday, February 02, 2010 2:55 PM Subject: Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty? Re: [BlindHandyMan] Why does my Propane heater burn so dirty?
I wonder if both these cases may not have to do with improperly adjusted gas/air mixtures? I don't think you should be running the heater that produces a gas smell as it sounds like incomplete combustion could be allowing unburned gas into the room. I know my natural gas wall heater has an air intake adjustment valve that the local gas company adjusted for the particular local gas BTU rating. I would definitely get both of these professionally checked. Tom Fowle On Mon, Feb 01, 2010 at 04:44:54PM -0500, Rick Hume wrote: > Good question Jerry!
