Re: [BlindHandyMan] bluebird house question

2010-01-29 Thread Kevin Doucet
Oh,

I've seen that! That makes perfect sense. I had a
mental image of a nail with a head at both ends
and I could not figure out how it could be
useful. Thanks for the clarification.

BTW, did you hear the one about the two Cajun
carpenters framing up a house? Every other nail
or so the first carpenter would take that nail
and throw it away. The other carpenter saw him
and came over to ask what he was doing throwing
away all those nails. The first carpenter replied
that those had the heads on the wrong end of the
nail and were no good. The second carpenter
exclaimed, "stupid, those are for the other side of the house!"

RE: [BlindHandyMan] bluebird house question

2010-01-29 Thread Tom Hodges
Try rough sawn fence boards from Lowwes or Home Depot. They're about 5 and
a half inches by 6 feet and cheap. Not a full 3 forths thick, but that wont
matter. Built in roughness so you won't have to score the inner front
surface.I think you can buy cedar or treated. I used the rough sawn pine
once and put exterior sealer, stain on the outside and left the inside
alone.

Doing more research, I learned that the front inside board should be rough
so the young birds can climb up. It was also stated that exterior grade
plywood is a good product to use. Since I am probably going to purchase
enough for 20 boxes I most likely will use the plywood. Now what is the best

way to rough up the inside of the front panel? I have a wood rasp or I could

purchase a few washers to use with my stacked dado cutter and make a bunch
of grooves across the boards. Any other ideas?

Down here they call those construction nails. We should organize a uniform
labeling convention to meet once a year and get everything that means the same
thing labeled with the same name.

Yeah, we'll get someone from Washington interested so the government can get
involved! Then they can form a committee, and they can hire a panel to study
the impact of a uniform labeling law, and then and then.

It isn't worth it...

A double headed nail, or sometimes called a scaffold nail, has a head,
then slightly behind that, another head. This way you hammer the nail all
the way in, until the first head bottoms out, but then you have that
second head sticking out so that you can easily pry it back out. Very
handy for making cement forms over and over.

Well a double headed nail has one head that goes tight to the wood. Then
there is a small part of the nail and the final head. The most common use is
for forms or scaffold. The purpose is so it holds like a regular nail but
has room for a claw hammer to quickly remove the nail.

Lenny,

If you have a saw mill over there in Pottsville, see if you can get some
slabs. A hell of a lot cheaper than plywood and should be rough enough on
the non bark side.

2010-01-28 Thread Tom Hodges
What about the outside front surface. Since there is no perch for predators
to stand on, don't you need a rough surface for the mom to hold on so she
can go in. Also, once the little ones go out, do they need to hold on too
the outside front to enter again?

2010-01-28 Thread wstephan
Actually, my old man and I used to make bird houses out of those slabs. At
that time, saw mill operators were glad to get rid of the stuff, and hopefully
if Lenny does this he can prevail on their better nature.
