Re: [BlindHandyMan] horizontal table

2007-01-07 Thread Dale Leavens
There are limited applications for a horizontal table, I have been cutting
sliding dovetails today, not required for the router table drawers I am
making but I like them just the same. To cut the long pins I set a fence
exposing only a little bit of the dovetail cutter then holding the side of
the drawer against the fence and the end of that board down onto the table
and with a push pad to hold the board against the fence pushed the board
past the cutter. The drawer wall is only 18 inches high so not too difficult
to control however a horizontal table would have the bit turning in the
horizontal axis and the edge of it protruding just above the table. I would
have pushed the end of the drawer side against a fence then pressed the
board down onto the table and holding it there pushed it past the bit like
you might with a miter gauge.

There aren't a lot of situations where you push wood through a router on
it's end or edge, Raised panels and sliding dovetails come to mind but most
router operations are done on the vertical access.

I hadn't thought of it before this thread came up but I am thinking that I
could probably build an accessory to create one for that purpose on the
table I am building. Some ready rod fitted with a crank to raise and lower a
carriage and some of that extruded channel as a guide should about do it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] horizontal table

2007-01-07 Thread Lenny McHugh
Hi John,
"Flatbed" Horizontal Benchtop Table

Rout wide stock FLAT ON THE TABLE with tall bits in the horizontal position.

Don't stand stock precariously on edge!
I plan to make a lot of raised panel doors and picture frames. I think that
this table would do a better job.
I am considering adding it to my collection.
Lenny

Hi John,
Yes, the regular router table the router is mounted under the table with the
bit being perpendicular the table top. The horizontal table the router is
mounted at the back so the bit is parallel to the table top.
