You should take a look at www.consumerreports.org they have great 
information about air conditioners and they rate them for their 
quietocity as well as lots of other things.

You can also look at split minis.  The compressor sits outside the house 
and you run the cooling lines up to window units.  Since the compressor 
isn't in the window they are a lot quieter.  You can run several window 
units from a single compressor.  However, they are quite expensive.

Those are called split or heat pump units.
