Spiro this is where we bought our stat. He even later sent us download
manual and one on disk actually more than one as we thought it was lost and
he did it for no charge. Excellent businessman and friendly too. I would
certainly buy there again. Marie and I both agree. Bill

Hi gang. Ours is a Talking VIP Thermostat which has run entirely
troublefree. We have had it aqbout 2 plus years. When I push the button on
the top left for support it audibly tells me to call

504 [733-5888] for assistance. I am sure they wouldn't mind if you
mentioned us, but it is strictly voluntary. Do use good batteries. We just
started our second set and I don't think the first set was entirely dead
yet. This doesn't utilize furnace power I believe. bill

Re: [BlindHandyMan] Talking Thermostats

2008-02-22 Thread Dale Leavens
Hi Rhonda Steve,

I have had my thermostat from TalkingThermostat.com for two and a half years
now and we really like it. Janet and I are, like you, both blind. You can set
it all up with voice prompts four cycles a day, five and two days so week-end
hours can be set different to week-day hours. We have ours set to 21C at 6:30
a.m. Because my wife is home all day we don't set it back but at 7 p.m. when we
are more likely to be sitting around at the television it comes up to 22C then
down to 16C over night. On Saturday and Sunday I think it turns up at 7:30 in
the morning.

You can clip it off of the wall to set it from your armchair if you like. I
don't think I have changed the batteries yet but I am not sure of that.

There are two models, one I have runs a standard 24 volt system but there is
one for the 110 volt systems common to heat pumps.

When I bought mine they weren't shipping to Canada because apparently people
were refusing to pay the customs so they ended up getting them back plus
shipping but I happened to be going to a professional convention in Houston and
they shipped it to my hotel. I smuggled it across the boarder only to discover
later that having been out of the country five days I didn't need to, I could
have declared it and brought it in legitimately.

I recommend you try

I got it a month ago for $129 and I have been quite happy with it. This is
the model that does not have the voice activation.
The VIP 1000 is intended for use with a standard HVAC system. If you have
a heat pump, they have the VIP 2000 for about $159
These come with instructions on CD.

I am curious about this and I know there is about 4 or 5 of them on the
market. I have forced air and central air so I am in need of something
 like
this I believe my thermostat has a 4 wire hookup. I am interested in
 others
that have purchased this or other talking models.

I have had the one from Talking Thermostats.com for nearly a year. We like
it well, it has been telling me that I need to change my filter and have my
furnace serviced for some time now and I haven't got around to figuring out
how to stop that message but that only happens when I ask to hear the
temperature or status.

 1. durability

Appears to be fine, only had it about nine months though.

 2. accurate

Seems to be accurate.

 3. clear voice and hopefully nice on the ears as some are tinny or just
 irritating

The speaker is pretty small so only so good but it is clear.

 4. easy to use

We don't seem to have much trouble using it except that I am pretty stupid
about remembering what buttons do what. With all the different remote
controls and other devices around here I find my aging brain just doesn't
keep all that straight.

 5. functionality and expandable / programmable

There are two sets of programming available, week-day and week-end and
within eack of those there are four programmes so you can turn the
temperature up, down then up and down again in each cycle or the other way
around.

 6 other things I forgot.

The device can be removed from the wall to be programmed from the comfort of
an easy chair.

 Thanks for your input/thoughts.

You are welcome.

 Subject: [BlindHandyMan] talking thermostats

I just bought the Calvin talking thermostat, and apart from learning my
 way
through the four daily programs, I find it's excellent value for $149 US
 it
is a full-featured thermostat and has the added advantage of being able to
receive raise or lower temperature commands by voice. It comes with a
 CD
that is full of well constructed audio instructions. I picked it up from
independent living aids and apart from the costs I had to incur getting it
over the border, I'm very pleased.

 Geoff
