Re: [BlindHandyMan] keep in mind when buying a talking thermostat`

Brice,

Are you sure you got the 2000 series? It looks like the 1000 series is
for basic heating and the 2000 series is for heat pumps and replaces
multi-wired thermostats.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] keep in mind when buying a talking thermostat`

2007-04-25 Thread Brice Mijares
Hi Dan, I have the VIP 1001. I have a gas furnace, and central air.The
technician took a look at the thermostat by removing it from the wall and
inspecting it, and said it was only capable of running a one stage unit.
Another words, both heat and air would start out at a low speed, and stay at
the low speed never making it to full speed. the correct way the unit
should run , it should start at the lower speed then kick into the higher
speed until it gets near the desired temperature, and then it drops back
down to the first stage and goes off. Then once the thermostat kicks on
either heat or air, it will run only at the first stage to maintain the
desired thermostat setting. It's actually a money saving feature.I do
hope this made sense.

Brice,

I'm no specialist on these things, but according to what I gleaned off of
the talkingthermostats.com page, it sounds like you need the VIP2000
series to handle a multi-stage system like yours. They can tell you more
though.

I may be wrong cause I have a heatpump. The function of the ramping
up/down of the blower is with the unit itself, not the thermostat.
Our sysem has a variable-speed blower and the previous thermostat we
had was designed very much like the VI2001 accept it didn't talk.

2007-04-26 Thread Brice Mijares
I really don't know how to respond. All I know is what the technician told
me. He also said that on the back of the thermostat itself has some
lettering where wires are indicated something like G-1 R-1 Y-1 ETC. The
thermostat I have don't have wire lettering for the 2 stage to run the
furnace correctly. Maybe someone more familiar with electrical training can
explain further as I really don't know all that much about electrical work.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] keep in mind when buying a talking thermostat`

2007-04-26 Thread chiliblindman
Brice, if only your furnace is two stage, it will work fine with a single
stage thermostat, or should in most cases for safety. That is designed in for
safety so people do not freeze and any therm can operate it. However a two
speed unit is a different thing.
There is a difference in how two stage and two speed units operate.
Inside the thermostat and your furnace and your A/C there are jumpers, dougle
switches, and set up items that allow your units to operate as per design to
the installer and the equipment makers.
If your repairman knows what he is doing that is one thing, if he did not
install it and is not used to your equipment, he might be working

Bob, all I can go by is what this tech said, and he said the thermostat was
not fully capable of running my unit efficiently. So he put a jumper in

After talking to Smart way Solutions, it wouldn't have mattered at the time
as Smart way solutions didn't have a 2 stage talking thermostat. They do
have now in beta which should be done with it's testing in a couple of
weeks.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] keep in mind when buying a talking thermostat`

2007-04-27 Thread Brice Mijares
Actually you can tell by just listening to it. The furnace starts off at a
lower speed, then after about 5 minutes or so, it will jump in to a higher
speed. Then when it gets near the desired temperature it will drop back
down to the slower speed. Keep in mind once the desired temp is reached
and it goes off, and the temperature changes enough to kick back on, the
speed should run at the lower speed. It's nothing more than a energy saving
feature. But over the winter, and summer, this lower speed will save a
substantial amount of money. I don't know about the rest of you, but during
the winter and summer months I turn the thermostat off when either leaving
or going to bed. As in California winter months are mild. So when you turn
the heater on in the morning, this is were this second stage or speed is
handy. The higher speed will blow warm air faster and warm the house
quicker, and the same thing during the summer, it will cool the house
quicker.

2007-04-27 Thread chiliblindman
One thing you need to keep in mind about buying a therm and hiring someone
to install it. You are just paying them to install it, they did not sell the
therm to you.
The other thing to remember is if you had it operating like this since
2001, why change it now if you were happy with it. It will not do any damage
to your system to let it be as it has been the last 6 years.
The main concern at this point is that the system sold you is way to big
if it has been doing its job at 60% or less than full rated output for 6 years.

2007-04-27 Thread Brice Mijares
Bob, you must of miss my first posting on this subject. I bought the
talking thermostat no more than 3 years ago. The reason I had the service
tech out here was I noticed over the past 2 summers, and especially last
summer when we here in California had a killer heat wave that my unit
wasn't moving air like it had in previous years. This is when I first found
out about my thermostat only being capable of a one stage unit. As Paul
Harvey says, now you know the rest of the story.
