All of the Leather man tools are of good quality so just buy
the one that fit's your needs, and don't attempt to board
any commercial airline flights with it on your person.

One of the best all purpose tools that fits in your pocket. I've used
mine extensively over the last 12 years, and all it needs is maybe a
little sharpening. It carries a life long guarantee and usually you'll
find a shop that will service it for free. Because the knife blade is
serrated, it's beyond me to sharpen, so I'm happy if someone else with
the know how will do it.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] leatherman

2007-04-25 Thread Victor Gouveia
While I have a couple of these types of multi-tools, there are some things
one should look out for.

First and foremost, are the tools tight or lose in their respective housing?

Swing them out several times before you buy.

If the metal casing that surrounds them feels flimsy, then you can look
forward to the tools trying to escape their confines in short order.

Secondly, if you feel that the price for a particular multi-tool is too
expensive, it isn't.

A good multi-tool will run you, anywhere, between 25 and 45 dollars.

These would consist of stainless steel tools, a good carrying case, and
solid hinges or quality rivets on witch the tools swing out of their
housing.

Lastly, you should check out the grips, especially for the pliers.

Some multi-tools have the additional tools on the inside, along with the
pliers pincers. What this essentially means is that once you swing out the
two handle portions of the multi-tool to form the pliers, the tools end up
on the outside of the grip, thereby creating a bad ass way to grip the tool
when using the pliers, and no way to apply pressure to the pliers to grip
anything without hurting your hand on the extra tools housed in the
multi-tool.

A good multi-tool will have the extra tools on the outside of the multi-tool
when the pliers are closed, so that when you grip them, your have a smooth
surface in which to apply pressure to the grip.

It seems like a simple thing to think about, but often people who purchase
these tools look at the price, rather than their functionality.

Most often, the cheap multi-tools will be housed in clear, hard plastic, and
it will be see through, unlike the more expensive ones that will be housed
within a glass cabinet under lock and key, and, most often, but not always,
they will be housed in a box, either cardboard or wood.

An easier way to tell the quality of these multi-tools, is by their weight.
If the multi-tool feels light, compared to another of the same price, I
would recommend the heavier one as those are more likely to last and be
stronger when used.

Hope this helps people avoid getting blisters while grasping the pliers
portion of the multi-tool

I've had and have a couple different models of Leatherman tools. Personally, I
think the Supertool II is more durable than the Wave model. There are also a

Re: [BlindHandyMan] leatherman

2007-04-25 Thread William Stephan
Max, Leatherman, is one of the several manufacturers of multitools. A good one
(and Leatherman is very good), will have needle-nosed pliers with a wire cutter
syzers perhaps, a knife, a saw, a serrated blade, a double-sided file and
several screw drivers. There's also probably going to be a can/bottle opener
too, and Gerber makes one with a special feature for getting gravel out of your
horse's hoof if that's what you need. These also are sometimes called SOG
tools, because the Army used to (probably still does) issue them to special
operations groups.
They're very good to have, and I am rarely without one.

Re: [BlindHandyMan] leatherman

2007-04-25 Thread spiro
You'll have to decide if you want one of two locking systems.
In the one I hav, with needle nose pliers, the saw, serated, long blade,
and file lock. You press a button to unlock. The little driver blades do
not lock.
With the unit that has the round pliers, every blade can lock but you lift
another blade to disengage.
But as I've had this conversation with the kind of folks who will "mine is
better than yours"
I say, "get what attachments you need, and if you need real tools, carry a
pack." no offense intended.

another good point.
Regarding the needle nose set I have, the hollow handles are out, with the
little tools inside and it's kind to the hand.
The step down from there with the round pliers have the backs of the
blades under your hand meat.

> pliers pincers.
>
>
>
>
>
