Dont forget, BlueQuartz runs from a server in Japan - possibly just a
power hit for a while.

[BlueOnyx:07067] Re: severe problem with disk integrity

Hi Richard,

> Summary of changes:

> * There is a severe problem with disk integrity.
> - [[base-dma.dma_off_drives,drives=/dev/hdc,

Typically that happens if you got an IDE drive there, were DMA transfers are
disabled. In your case the complaint was for /dev/hdc, which by itself
warrants a yellow warning light in that case. Active Monitor tried to enable
DMA transfers, but failed. That then gave you a red light.

The actual RAID1 array may be sync'ed and everything, but if you got an IDE
drive there where DMA transfers are not working or disabled, then that's a
serious performance issue, as the drive will be a hell of a lot slower.

BUT: According to the SMART status /dev/hdc is a WD5000AAKS-00A7B0, which is a
SATAII drive, not IDE.

Which leads to an entirely different issue here: Apparently you're running
SATAII drives in "compatible" mode (as configured in your BIOS), which also is
a performance relieability. It's like dropping an anchor.

There is a real problem...

[root@spottedbass bin]# /sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
  setting using_dma to 1 (on)
  HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
  using_dma=  0 (off)

From what I can tell, it looks like the onboard motherboard disk
controller may not be supported in the kernel

Time to add that motherboard to the "unsupported" list I think :(

A quick fix for that would be to use a piece of black electrical tape
and stick that on the screen where the red icon is. Then you won't see
it anymore.

What happens if you create the /etc/named.conf.include file that it is

Having previously had the user ABL disabled, as specified in the help text, are
there any recommendations on what to set it at if I was to enable it? Or is it
still recommended to leave it disabled?

Hosts is set to 10/hour.

Ok, then please delete the PAM_abl databases manually:

rm /var/lib/abl/hosts.db
rm /var/lib/abl/users.db

They will get recreated next time around when PAM_abl is used.

[BlueOnyx:07049] Re: web1.uhostme.com Yum Update output for 04-10-11

2011-04-15 Thread Darrell D. Mobley
Well, the experiment failed. It seems no matter how many times I reboot the
server after a new kernel comes in via YUM and I edit grub.conf, changing
“default=1” to “default=0”, it hangs in the middle of the night, stops
listening on HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc. With monitoring enabled, my colo host saw it
stall at 3:33AM and power cycled it. It sure would be nice to figure out WHY
this is happening because I had power cycling that six drive RAID5. The only
clues I can come up with now are:

Apr 10 06:06:23 web1 init: Trying to re-exec init

Apr 10 06:06:32 web1 init: Trying to re-exec init

Apr 15 03:12:59 web1 init: Trying to re-exec init

The 10th is when the big YUM choke came through, bearing a new kernel. And of
course, last night I edited grub.conf to change default=1 to default=0.

Of course every 30 minutes, it’s trying to clear out those 44 failed logins and
failing, because they keep reappearing in the GUI.

I had not rebooted, but I have now. Twice. J

Why you might ask?

It’s an experiment. My HP DL380 G3 likes to hang up at 4AM on the morning
after a new kernel comes in via YUM and I edit grub.conf, changing “default=1”
to “default=0”. After it hangs up, if I reboot it, it runs fine until the next
time a new kernel comes in via YUM and I edit grub.conf again to change the
default kernel to the newest one. I don’t know why. (By hang up, I mean it
stops answering HTTP, FTP, SSH, etc., but responds to PINGs fine. So it’s not
locked up, it just quits responding.)

So my experiment tonight is to change the default kernel to the latest “0”,
reboot it, and then reboot it again. I want to see if the second reboot up
front will work the same magic it has in the past, just without it sitting 5
hours waiting on me to get up and cycle the power strip.

Did you reboot since installing all updates? If not, please do. A lot of
processes don't like it of glibc or other libraries are replaced while the
services are still running.

A few Compass users have modified and customised settings in the
sysconfig spamass-milter settings that were not compatible with the
Compass update. I have built an update that will validate settings, to
ensure a smooth upgrade.

This is now online and available via NewLinQ.

Hi Maurice,

don't know if it helps you, but i did this to get some offending IPs:

edit /usr/share/sendmail-cf/m4/proto.m4 somewhere near line 1092 / 1093
("handle virtual user" section):

old:
  .
  R< error : $-.$-.$- : $+ > $* $#error $@ $1.$2.$3 $: $4
  R< error : $- $+ > $* $#error $@ $(dequote $1 $) $: $2

new:

[$&{client_addr}]
  R< error : $- $+ > $* $#error $@ $(dequote $1 $) $: $2
[$&{client_addr}]

afterwards a

rm sendmail.cf
m4 sendmail.mc > sendmail.cf
/etc/rc.d/init.d/sendmail restart

this produces a maillog entry with the offending IPs behind it:
