Re: [Boatanchors] Off Topic but I think still of interest to those interested in military radios
Thank you for sharing this. David KD4E Hello:Last July my wife and I and our two kids moved into a small house in Arlington Virgina. Arlington is a Wash DC suburb. Google says our house is 7 miles from the White House. I think all of you know DC and much of the rest of the US east coast is digging out from a big snow storm. Earlier today I was outside working with my neighbors. We were helping each other dig out our drive ways so we could get our cars out in. Our neighbor, Denny , an older gentleman showed up with a big snow blower. Denny and his wife live across the street and one house west from my house. Denny helped all of us. He refused gas money and worked unceasingly. It is really nice having such neighbors. I have benefited many times in prior neighborhoods before from generous neighbors with snow removal equipment but never before have I had my drive way snow blow-ed clear .. by a retired four star US Army General, former Army Chief of Staff. [Boatanchors] Looking for 2 boatanchor rigs
I'm looking for two modified boatanchor rigs. Please share this if you know someone who may be interested. (I'm not on the Collins list.) In hopes of avoiding shipping, if possible, I can work out relays (if I don't attend) from the Orlando Fest in February. Not sure of others in 2016 yet.) Or, I'm willing to drive a reasonable distance. 1. A Gonset Communicator IV 3342 or other compact all-tube 2 meter AM rig which may be converted to FM (or which already has been) so that I can leave it in line during storms. (I have Polyphasers on everything but still ...) 2. A Multi-Elmac AF-67 converted to DSB w/Power Supply. (This modification is beyond both my talent and time. A homebrew PS is fine.) Note: I have info. re. DSB conversion at the driver stage. (Final modulation tubes & xfmr aren't needed.) To Trade for both: COLLINS 73A3 Receiver Serial #50 w/Original Manual dated 1953. Based on the Collins rating scale found here http://www.collinsradio.org/information/gradingstandards-thks-gary/ my receiver is at least "Good". No obvious mods or bad scratches. Re: [Boatanchors] Safety in Travel [Was: Trade for Heath 12-pin Female HP-23B Cable and/or Connector]
Ron, Wow, glad to hear that you are OK! I had my 20 year old son reading quotes from a book he bought at a thrift store in Lawrenceville - it was all about famous insults. After that he launched into politics ... add to that lots of coffee and I was awake ... but then I got home and my eyes were glazed-over looking at the computer. BTW: I have discovered that when coffee stops working one square of a Jalapeno Cheddar cracker every 1/2hr keeps me awake (the cracker and cheese buffers the pepper in my stomach but the capsaicin lights me up). We've had the '06 Prius packed tight but keep lighter plastic boxes on the top & the head-rests should block their forward movement. It's scary to think about boatanchors as unguided missiles in a car accident! David KD4E PLEASE be careful doing this to yourself. Getting just a couple hours sleep and then driving to the Shelby hamfest and back home again almost cost me my life. Driving to the fest was easy because I had a friend, Jeff WA1WXL to talk to all the way there. I stayed about 4 hours and was really tired so I gave the golfcart to Brian KN4R, told him I'd see him tomorrow (Saturday), that I was tired and going home. I got within 2 miles of home and fell asleep at the wheel and destroyed my Buick PA and was VERY lucky I didn't hit someone headon in the oncoming lane. Glanced off a big oak tree. Be careful driving tired, also be careful loading the backset of your car full of heavy radios to take to a fest, if I had loaded my car as I normally do the stuff in the backseat would have likely killed me in the wreck. PLEASE BE CAREFUL. R- w4ron "q...@kd4e.com" wrote: I blame the few hours of sleep at the Hamfest & the long drive home. "And that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!" Re: [Boatanchors] Edebris - BAMA Down
Apparently the owner of the edebris repository toggled on robots.txt which instructs sites like the wayback archive and other web search systems to not capture and save the content. This was apparently to prevent people from taking the donated efforts of volunteers for the purpose of resale for profit. While I understand the intent - if edebris is gone then so also is much of the content. If someone offers a repository I'm guessing between us all we might re-assemble most of the documents. I don't know what the traffic or storage space requirements might look like. As for those taking the labors of others for profit - they learned that from government - and those foolish enough to pay for what is free empower both ... since this is just a hobby ... best to let them both play in their own sandbox. Re: [Boatanchors] Another Parts Store Closes...
My sense is that stores need to figure out new itches to scratch. If you want buyers for hardware then you need to teach younger people (youth and adults) how to use it. If you want more interest then you need to be more interesting. Host events like "robot wars" and Special Event stations and mini-hackathons ... have someone demonstrate how to convert an AM or FM receiver into a transmitter, launch a balloon then have a Fox Hunt to find the landing site ... get creative! Set up a testing & repair bench for minpr things like checking FM deviation, cleaning noisy pots, repairing connectors, etc - get local Hams and/or retired electricians/service techs to help in exchange for a discount. Get creative ... online can't offer any of these things. IMHO, YMMV ... HX-50 looks promising but at 45 LBS, 9"h x 17.5"w x 9.5"d I'd sure not want to be hauling it to Field Day, ARES/Emcomm tests, or to show-off at Club meetings. Re: [Boatanchors] 160-10m Compact 160-10m Tube SSB Rig?
I see the 20A at Hamfests - usually priced for collectors: http://frank.pocnet.net/instruments/CentralElectronics/20A/20A.html I do agree with your praise of the design and marketing. It would not qualify as "compact" by my definition and is far more complex than I'd like for the intended purpose. A variable-carrier DSB exciter/transmitter would cover SSB & AM, though some may object to DSB, most modern rigs can easily remove the undesired signal. Or, perhaps it's possible to add a switched filter following the balanced modulator? I don't know ... Re: [Boatanchors] [FLBOATANCHORS] ARRL Band Plan
I find this ARRL text difficult to follow and have not kept up with these things lately. Are they saying that the FCC currently limits rtty & other data modes (not just rtty) to 5kHz (7100-7105 kHz) of a 300kHz band? If that is correct are those using CW between 7100-7105 kHz currently in violation of FCC regs? If 7100-7125 kHz were to be set aside for CW where should all of the digi-modes (including rtty, psk, bpq32, thor, etc.) be located? With the rapid increase of digi modes 5kHz isn't going to meet the need. We do have 300kHz to work with - while avoiding conflicts with other Regions. What is the alternative proposal from the CW community, please? I'm no fan of the unattended & easily abused Winlink-type modes but the reality is that digi mode use by Hams is growing and needs to be accomodated. The best way to defeat a bad proposal is to offer a workable alternative. WDYT? David KD4E On 40 meters, the committee concluded that it would be unrealistic to try to bring the ARRL band plan into alignment with the rest of the world, particularly with Regions 1 and 3 where operating patterns developed when the entire band, including phone, was just 100 kHz wide and is still only 200 kHz. While 7040 kHz is a recognized RTTY/data DX frequency in the band plan, the best place for other RTTY/data activity in the US is above 7070 kHz. The committee proposes aligning the band plan with the “Considerate Operator’s Frequency Guide,” with wide data modes — outside of ACDS — at 7115-7125 kHz. The “Guide” shows 7070-7125 kHz for RTTY/data, while the ARRL band plan shows 7080-7125 kHz. The FCC mandates that ACDS be confined to the 7100-7105 kHz segment. > Are you aware of the new ARRL BAND PLAN? > > Many of us use 7100-7125 kHz daily for CW. They want to absurdly > give it to RTTY! I was thinking of bringing them to Hamcation - is $15. each a reasonable asking price? Also have a RCA WG-401A to bring. [Boatanchors] Anyone know Don K2DGR in NY?
Anyone know Don, K2DGR, in Fishs Eddy, NY? He was in a car accident & "disappeared" for a while, then was feeling better & back home, but he's stopped responding to emails again. [Boatanchors] FS: Two Elmac AF-67's
I have two AF-67's for sale. One includes a set of tested-good tubes, the other is partially tubed. Both are untested. Serial #'s 915 & 6776. I don't have a PS but may be able to source a homebrew one from a Ham friend (it may include 200v for a Gonset G-66B receiver). The plan is to bring them to Hamcation in Orlando in mid-February. I will hold and deliver them if pre-paid (too many no shows in the past) -- otherwise first-come at the fest. Or, I can ship at my actual cost. Asking $95. for fully-tubed AF-67 (with tested tubes) and $55. for partially-tubed AF-67 (tested tubes). Also selling my Gonset G-66B receiver. $55. shipped USPS Priority Flat Rate USA or $40. pre-paid delivered to Hamcation. -- *David* ~KD4E~ Nevils, Georgia USA Safe & Secure Search Engine: duckduckgo.com Android for Hams: groups.yahoo.com/group/hamdroid Creative Tech: groups.yahoo.com/group/ham-macguyver Raspi Alternative: groups.yahoo.com/group/beagleboneblack/ Restored to design-spec at Heaven's gate 1Cor15:22 ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
Re: [Boatanchors] Can a SECO 107 Test an 826 Tube?
Dave, I should have been more specific. Is there an adapter and are there settings that would allow the Seco 107 to test an 826? The hope was someone had either tried & failed or found a way. Not much activity in this area, not like central Florida, but I'll ask around & see if someone has a tube tester than can handle it. [Boatanchors] Can a SECO 107 Test an 826 Tube?
I have several 826 tubes, also one 832 and others, I'd like to sell but wish to test first. Anyone know if the Seco 107 can test them? I have the flip-chart, booklet, & "commercial" tube references and they are not listed in any of them. [Boatanchors] FS: Bunch 'O Pencil Tubes, Sockets, & Shields
Been acquiring these here and there for a while to build stuff with these but reality keeps getting in the way ... Shields (13) Sockets (5) 5702's (at least 20) 5840's (at least 9) Others include 5829's, 5896's, 6111's, 6147's 5899A's, etc. I'm guessing about 100 in all. Labels include GE, Raytheon, US Army, a "CK" prefix, etc. Some are trimmed for sockets, some have long leads, some are clearly used, some very clean. A random test suggests that most are good. I'd like to sell these as a lot. Asking $72.50 for the lot, including std. shipping USA. -- *David* ~KD4E~ Nevils, Georgia USA Safe & Secure Search Engine: duckduckgo.com Android for Hams: groups.yahoo.com/group/hamdroid Creative Tech: groups.yahoo.com/group/ham-macguyver Raspi Alternative: groups.yahoo.com/group/beagleboneblack/ Restored to design-spec at Heaven's gate 1Cor15:22 ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors

[Boatanchors] FS: SECO 520 "Antenna Tester"
FS: SECO 520 "Antenna Tester" It's a SWR-Power meter in a shiny brass-look metal faceplate case. Looks great and appears to work OK - perhaps it fills a gap in someone's SECO collection? I can send pictures of face and the equally clean inside. There's one ding to side of the black rear half of the case next to the RF In SO-239 connector. $17.50 shipped Flat Rate USPS Priority. -- *David* ~KD4E~ Nevils, Georgia USA Safe & Secure Search Engine: duckduckgo.com Android for Hams: groups.yahoo.com/group/hamdroid Creative Tech: groups.yahoo.com/group/ham-macguyver Raspi Alternative: groups.yahoo.com/group/beagleboneblack/ Restored to design-spec at Heaven's gate 1Cor15:22 ___ Boatanchors mailing list Boatanchors@puck.nether.net https://puck.nether.net/mailman/listinfo/boatanchors
