On a completely different note, but I felt like
sharing it:

One of my cats performed a successful internet
search. I'd left the browser open, with iGoogle
up. The cat's contribution was apparently typing
"0222", a bit of mouse movement, and a click or an
enter.

What I woke up to was GoogleMaps, showing a local
hair salon with a phone number ending in 0222.
It could be that cats are not getting smarter, but
Google is.

RE: USA, love it or leave it!~)

2010-07-02 Thread Jeroen van Baardwijk
It's not all bad for the women in the world. Over her in .nl, when you are a
woman you can even get away with psychologically and physically abusing your
husband and children. The official standpoint of gov.nl is that when it
comes to domestic violence, women can only be victims and men can only be
violent criminals. To hell with all those studies that show them wrong.

A woman only needs to *claim* being a victim of domestic violence (no
evidence needed) to have her husband arrested and beaten up by the cops,
then locked up for several years on charges of domestic violence. When you
are a man, you cannot even report your abusive spouse to the police because
they simply won't believe you.

Sad to say, as someone who has been on the receiving end of spousal abuse
for the last seven years, I know what I'm talking about... :(

That, too, but seriously, alberto, basic instinct is just a movie. there
are a lot countries where you really can get away with murder by seducing
the cop. in some countries a woman is arrested and beaten for showing bare
ankle. i think in brazil, you can beat your wife. in some countries you
can even kill your wife. something to do with honor? TANJ!~)

RE: Archives

2010-06-14 Thread Jeroen van Baardwijk
I have a subtantial part of the List Archives from Day 1 till roughly 6
years ago (back when any day with less than 100 messages was considered a
"slow day" ) still available off-line, thanks to my attempt years ago
to set up the Great Brin-L Archive. I estimate that archive to be 90-95%
complete.

Only problem is that the Zip drive itself is currently living in one of
approx. 80 cardboard boxes in an off-site storage unit. On the bright side:
as part of my Decluttering Project it should resurface in the near future.

Why do you ask, Doug? Planning on a second attempt at building a List
Archive?

As a practical matter, probably. But take a look here, too:

There may be other archives out there. And I have older archives, but no
easy way yet to make them available.

Web 2.0 Suicide Machine

2010-01-24 Thread Jeroen van Baardwijk
Tired of your Social Network? Besides committing suicide in Real Life, you
can now also commit suicide in your Virtual Life! Someone came up with the
Web 2.0 Suicide Machine, which lets you delete your social-networking
profiles, kill your fake virtual friends, and completely do away with your
Web 2.0 alter ego. Currently runs with Facebook, Myspace, Twitter and
LinkedIn.

Nah, for real fireworks you'd have to start a "Palestinians good, Israel evil"
discussion. Or launch the next "Abortion Is Evil" thread.

The obvious one thing you will want to avoid is having a ballpoint pen
anywhere near your screen from now on. ;-)

Draw an imaginary circle around your laptop (a two meter diameter should
suffice) and declare it a Ballpoint-Pen-Free Area.

And finally, as a last resort, if anyone enters the circle while holding a
ballpoint pen, shoot to kill.

My friends I hate to write this. Been putting it off for a while.

My younger sister, Lesley, the youngest of the four of us, mother of my
five-year-old niece, Sarah, could not fight off the sepsis that attacked her
body. Lesley died this morning.

I have never hurt so much.

The other Brin-L still exists (although list traffic is low) and will remain
active. The Brin-L.com website will also remain up and running. The Alliance
for Progress Encyclopedia was added to it recently, further plans include
updating various pages and doing a bit of redesign. Plus of course the
overhaul of the A4P Encyclopedia.

Why should those archives be merged? They share the name "Brin-L" but other
than that they're separate mailing lists.

Ohmygawd, archives. That just brought back memories of my second-largest
project ever: The Great Brin-L Archive...

That will certainly happen in the near future. In fact, once inspiration and
sufficient nothing-better-to-do time will come to me I will even create a
new website about this List. A little over a year ago I once again became
the owner of the Brin-L.net domain name, but so far all it does is
autoforward to the Brin-L.com website and provide me with an e-mail address
to subscribe to this List (as you may have noticed from the headers). I
haven't yet figured out what else to do with it, so if anyone has any
suggestions, let me know!

Honey, I'm home!

2010-01-04 Thread Jeroen van Baardwijk
Hi all!

It's been a while, but one of the most famous (or most notorious) list
members from Brin-L's past has come home.

I'm back.

Matt Lundstrom has forwarded me several messages about the Brin Wiki (or
whatever it will be called). It sounds like a helluva interesting project
(and a helluva lot of work!), I hope I will be able to contribute to it.

He also forwarded me a bunch of messages about my possible return; nice to
see that people still remember me after all those years. Then again, I seem
to make a lasting impression on almost anyone who meets me, both online and
in the Real World. As for the question of that impression being a good or a
bad one, well er. I won't go into that.

So, did I miss anything while I was away?
