"sleep" command generates hardisk activity

2005-12-20 Thread Jochen Baier

hi,

i run in a weird problem: a script which use the "sleep" command,
generates hardisk access every x seconds. this is really annoyning cause
i can hear the harddisk sound.

an other user reported the same behavier.

the script:

while true; do
sleep 3
done

output from "strace sleep 3":

I don't think anyone on this list has any idea of what you're talking
about. This list is about coreutils, and has nothing to do with mysql,
gentoo, or general linux questions. You need to post your question to a
mysql forum, and include *exactly* what commands you are typing, the
*exact* output, what you expected to happen, etc. Your message does not
include nearly enough information.

That's strange, but it indicates that the problem is not with
coreutils or with the C library, but with your kernel's implementation
of nanosleep. I'd say you should pursue this with whoever maintains
your kernel.

Most likely this is the access timestamps being updated on the files
being read, try adding the noatime option to your mount options to
prevent this.
