Hehe. Try it! However, you are writing to the wrong list. This is
for reporting bugs, not the most basic questions how to download and
install program which essentially runs on the command line and needs
an editor for creating input files.

Everything you need can be found at

  www.lilypond.org

A user support list is lilypond-u...@gnu.org (which you must subscribe
to).

Actually, this program doesn't sound very good at all. It's MIDI
capabilities are rudimentary at best.

However, it's as good as it looks, which is very.

All that said, this is the bug list. Comments and general questions
are best sent to lilypond-u...@gnu.org

Have what?

Werner was referring to the small white triangles
when he said "bad typography". Of the five examples
you've submitted, only the Grieg and the Pierné
have that problem.

If different stem lengths for the same note bothers
you, realize that the complexities of typesetting
beams demand that stem lengths vary, often greatly.
See the attached png for an example.

What is bad about the Mozart, Debussy and Bizet
examples? They look okay to me.

One more thing:

We do.

Here is some more bad typography from major publishers. All of them have it.

It's similar to book printing: The tradition in engraving accumulated
over more than 100 years *defines* good music typography -- we got
accustomed to it, and we even expect it. From this point of view,
your Eulenburg example is badly engraved. And handling plate printing
dilemmas correctly will bring us a step nearer to well looking scores.

Re: Stem lenghts

2009-05-11 Thread Pekka Siponen

Not really. The problem with this sample is that this Eulenburg
edition is far too small to really show high typography. While it
leads the eye well, it exhibits far too much other typographical
defects, for example the second and last beam, both presenting those
small white triangles which should *never* be present in former times
since they can be flooded with ink as soon as the printing plate gets
used a bit. If you want to show us good typography please refer to a
large score for a piano solo piece, say.

I don't feel that it is important to consider the plate printing
dilemmas in computer output. My intention was to show the repeated
notes, only the stem lenghts, not to imply that the example is
extraordinary typography. I can see that the stems are the same lenght
when the notes are repeated. But then again I got my new glasses last week.

There is no code that penalizes for small white triangles on the inner stems.
