It's not a *chord*; it's just notes occuring simultaneously. Err... that will make sense later, once you've read the tutorial. Others: I detest LM 1.4. It always confuses people -- and worse, it confuses the people who are seriously trying to understand lilypond. People who just jump into the tutorial don't have this problem. Ah, I forgot to mention -- I changed the wording in 2.11. Please check the online docs for 2.11 and let me know if you can think of any improvement. I see, I didn't check that. Definitely better. And nice layout! I think it might still be confusing for somebody trying it out. Perhaps more so for somebody reading the tutorial first because he knows the difference between a chord and simultaneous notes. But I see the difficulty. You use `` '' next to make an expression simultaneous to a single note. Perhaps a footnote for somebody being confused, saying that this is actually a chord or would be typeset in multiple staffs this way but is just used to illustrate the concept here?
