Email and word processing is fine but it is hopeless for web browsing because the browsers that can run on it do not support modern web page content. I stopped using it for Lilypond work three years ago. If you consider upgrading to 10.4, be aware that it is common for newer versions to have larger resource requirements. Issue 2338 refers the (now poorly-named) osx-universal version which is only for x86, while this refers specifically to the PPC version. I would consider them to be two different code bases, so bugs for each should be treated separately. It is not yet clear whether it will work on 10.4, or if we still need to use the 0.4 version of the lilypond-app bundle for use on ppc with OSX 10.4. The question has been asked, but has not yet been answered. Also, GUB is currently broken, so we can't test a patch that would move the ppc version of mac-osx-lilypond-app back to 0.4 (which works with ppc on OSX 10.4). He said we should use 0.4 for that. I have no evidence that GUB is broken[1]. It cannot compile git master, but that's due to a problem in git master, not GUB. [1] I realize that Phil encountered some difficulty, but I have no reason to think this is any unusual breakage in GUB. I think it's just the usual 10-100 hours of work that it takes to set up GUB on a platform that differs in any respect (be it linux distribution or cpu architecture) from the working one. His fix moved _both_ the PPC and the x86 darwin ports to 0.6, and removed the commend that said we wanted to keep ppc at 0.4. Issue 1943 was an x86 issue. Seems to me we should have PPC be 0.4, and x86 be 0.6, and both platforms would be happy. Its successor 10.5 Leopard is the last version released for PPC, in 2007. 10.4 is the last version supporting some Classic system calls IIUC, so since 10.5 is the total end of line for PPC, there might be some incentive to stick with 10.4. Nevertheless I don't see that the discontinued PPC line is important enough for us to bend over backwards more than the last released version. I don't know who of us actually does the MacOSX ports and how much work would be involved here, and we might consider making a brief announcement on the general user list to see if there is anybody around for whom moving to 10.5 is indeed not an option. But I am strongly inclined to declare the support for MacOSX 10.4 ended.
