I don't agree with the following paragraph:

Many distributions include LilyPond in their normal package system. These
versions are easier to install and uninstall than the generic packages, but
they may be older. If you wish to use our generic packages, please
uninstall the official version from your system using the normal package
manager for your distribution. See your distribution’s documentation about
how to use their package manager.


More versions of lilypond can be installed on linux without any problem.
Most importantly, some packages may depend on the lilypond package of the
distribution. For example, a widely used editor:

# aptitude why lilypond
i   frescobaldi Depends lilypond

Denemo and Frescobaldi have a preference option to set the path of the
lilypond binary.
At any rate, if the full path is not specified, the lilypond.org binary
will have priority in the PATH.
