I'm sorry for TRIPLE (!) post. Since I got no usual reply
from mailman (telling me my post awaits moderator action),
I went off and subscribed to the list, and resent, because
I thought that because of spam volume the non-subscriber
posts are just deleted (it is often the case in various
places nowadays).  But when resending I used wrong From
address - not the one which I subscribed - so I corrected
this error.  Now all 3 posts are here at once...  Oh well...

Thanks, I just now reproduced the problem with tar 1.26 but could
not reproduce it with the latest git version.

this appears to be similar to this bug:

which was fixed in tar upstream, here:

http://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/bug-tar/2011-06/msg1.html

Maybe you could backport that fix to Debian?
