FWIW, my 4.13 Info enters an infloop as soon as I type the first of
those backslashes.  Not sure if this is system-dependent.

Info 5.2 announces a failure as soon as I type the first backslash.

Thanks for reporting this, I remember that this did used to work
correctly but I must have broken it at some point. I've made a couple
of changes that mean it should work better now.
