I didn't say killall.  I said kill the paritcular process listed in the pid 
file.
This should have the effect of shutting down the server.

Also try "httpd -k stop", which is exactly the command that apachectl is 
running.

Yes, killall works just fine but that's not the point.  apachectl doesn't work
as it should.

in the pid file?
