[BVARC] Land line

2024-02-14 Thread AOL/ CompuServe Mail via BVARC
Hey guys:
I have a question for those in the know.    I have a CapTel phone which
prints out what is being said by the caller since I am hard of hearing.  How
will this removable of the Copper line effect me since I am told I need to keep
my home phone line.

infrastructural crisis… so this story just adds that extra validation of the
importance of Ham Radio in the event of infrastructure outage.

price per person do you think is appropriate for a nice dinner and a nice
meeting place?        (this will get a variety of prices), so the club can
choose .. With the way you worded it I would be inclined        to just choose
the lowest number... This rewording is more like how much would you pay MAX...
then it would be easier for BVARC to choose a better value for the member
since the banquet is (traditionally)        partially subsidized by the club
for club members... Means club member is getting  a good deal...             As
is $35 a person, geez I can eat all the catfish I can stuff in for less than
$15 at many places..    Unless we are doing something very elegant, the prices
this year and last year are WAY TOO MUCH..its supposed to be partially
subsidized by the club for club members  And $50 for non members??  A guy
can get in and out of some of the fanciest restaurants .. you can get a pretty

Subject: [BVARC] BVARC Awards Banquet - Update I want to let everyone know that
even though it was a great effort, we did not meet the minimum for the caterer
for the BVARC Awards Banquet. So at this time the banquet on the 18th is
cancelled. For those members that paid via PayPal, their money will be
refunded. Those that paid by check, the check will be mailed back to you. If
you have not received your refund by the end of January, please send me an
e-mail at n5...@att.net  It is unfortunate about the cancellation but the
banquet is not going away. Over the next few days a survey will be e-mailed to
all members to see just what everyone would like to do for an awards banquet.
The survey will only a few questions: 1. Would you like to have the banquet at
a restaurant or have it catered?2. What type of food would you like to have?3.
What day of the week would you like the banquet held?4. What kind of price
range would be acceptable for you for the banquet - $15 to $20, $20 to $25, $25
to $30 or $30 to $35? Hopefully we can get enough responses in over the next
few weeks so a new banquet can be held sometime in the last half of March.
When you get the survey, please consider your answers carefully and
constructively. Club members input is what keeps the club going.  73, Mike

Rick,

I put up a 80 M OFCD from my chimney.  I put the Balun on top of a 10 foot
fiberglass rod strapped to my chimney top  cover.  That gets it to about 32
feet high at the apex of the inverted vee.  So far no complaints from the HOA
Gestapo.  While it is visible from the street, it is vey unobtrusive, and just
looks like a 4” X 4” box mounted to my chimney cover.  If the HOA asks I plan
to tell them it is an atmospheric monitor to make sure the air quality is good.

Antennas MFJ-2010

Hi Rick,

Since I don’t have any personal experience with that particular antenna I can’t
comment on the build quality.

But I do have an OCF dipole with a 4:1 balun cut for the same bands in an HOA
situation. Mine is at 25 feet and I’ve been extremely happy with its
performance. My furthest SSB contact has been Bosnia on 20m. It’s no beam but
it gets the job done! It’s been up for almost a year now and I’ve managed to
avoid the HOAs attention. For mine I’m using black insulated wire with the
balun hung from my 2 story chimney on a pulley and each leg of the dipole
running to two trees.

If you want to go super stealth I’d recommend building or purchasing a 4:1
balun and using some Davis RF poly stealth wire. It has a very high strength to
diameter rating. https://www.davisrf.com/antenna-wire/polystealth.php

If you feel that the MFJ is going to work for you I’d say go for it based on
the reviews. If it ends up not suiting your home QTH, well, now you have a
portable antenna!

I acquired a Kenwood TS2000 through this forum a few months ago, and have been
browsing around for a first antenna.

There are almost too many resources for discussion and recommendation, a very
nice problem to have.

Based on a number of comments, including remarks  by Dave Casler in his Youtube
channel, I’ve landed on this:

MFJ Ultra-Lite Off-Center Fed Dipole Antennas MFJ-2010

I’m not exactly sure yet how I’ll get it 35 feet up, but that’s a problem
regardless of which antenna, unless I go with a tower. Living under an HOA in a
gated compound, I prefer to see if I can get by with just the wire and make
that “inconspicuous”.

If anyone has a strong conviction that this is just the wrong thing to start
with, I’d love to know why and what you would recommend instead. Keep in mind,
this is not the only antenna I will buy that, just the first.

Thanks, all.
