Hi Eddie,

In several places I read that it was here but I cannot find it.

Thanks,

Re: [BVARC] N3FJP Settings for TXQP?

2023-09-15 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Chris, you don't "HAVE" to use the QSO parties software but they are
designed to have places for special exchange info to be recorded.
As an example: the TXQP software has a place on the screen to record your
contacts county. EXAMPLE: Fort Bend is FBEN.

On the N5FJP home page, at the top, you will find a dropdown tab labeled
"Contest Logs". With your cursor on the tab, you will see "State
Party Contest Logs." This is where you will find the "Texas QSO party Log"
that you can download.

For the best value I recommend that you purchase the complete package.
Details on FJP's home page.

Hope this helps,
Roy - W5TKZ

Re: [BVARC] 3 element 10 meter Beam question

2021-03-23 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Gayle, Daytime contacts are common on 10 meters during the daytime because
of what is called "Trans-equatorial Propagation". That is, signals pass
across the equator.
I won't go into specifics on this subject but if you will Google
"Trans-equatorial Propagation", you will find detailed explanations that
will answer your question.

Marty, this looks like the cable that controls the FC-40 External Automatic
Antenna Tuner. I don't think you need this with your radio.
If you do get the VL-1000 Solid State Linear Amp, you will need a cable
that plugs into the "Linear Jack (10pin)" on the back of
your 450D to control the amplifier.

[BVARC] Stir Crazy

2020-08-30 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
After the hurricane, little Johnny was on the lawn talking with some
friends. One friend asked "So how did your family survive the hurricane?"

Johnny answered. "WellOur mud hut got washed away and so did I. As I
made my way back home, I could see the family was rebuilding. Suddenly,
this white powder came out of the sky and coated all the construction."

"So what's wrong with that?" another asked.

"When I finally got home, I found all my uncles and ants were dead!"

(SorryToo much time in exile).

Nizar - To dummy loads? No.. Radiated Power refers to an antenna. A dummy
load will radiate far less power, and be legal, if input is legal limit.
Of course, with enough input power you could exceed the limits of the dummy
load. (Who would be the dummy now?)

Re: [BVARC] Grounding my station

2020-02-21 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Static charges from wind on an antenna wire are not serious in this part of
the country due to the humidity. Caution is always advised and unplugging
your antenna from your radio when not in use does not indicate you are a
coward. A near miss from a lightning bolt is more likely to happen than a
wind generated
static charge.
My station has the correct grounding and I *still* remove the antenna from
my expensive radio.

[BVARC] Donation Sales

2016-03-14 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
QST…QST…QST * LAST CALL* - 5 Days to Go!!!

Greater Houston Hamfest is fast approaching (March 18 & 19) and once again
it’s time to clean the shack of all those boat anchors, dust catchers and
just plain “I’ll never use these…but I hate to throw it away.”

Why not give those items to the BVARC Donation Sales Table at the Hamfest?
Yes! We will accept *almost* anything.

Your tax deductible “Junk” is another Hams “Treasure.” Plus, all proceeds
go to the BVARC general fund. By donating your items you not only
help BVARC but, you also create room in your shack for more treasures.

If you have a bunch of stuff that needs to be picked up, or need more info
contact:

Roy Storey (W5TKZ) at 281 342 2404 (I screen calls through an answering
machine so give me a chance to pick up.)

John Whiteman (K5LKJ) at 281 530 0432.

David,

I am heading up the "Donations Sales Table" this year and yes we will take
almost anything. You can bring your "stuff" to the club meeting on March 11
and I can take it from there. Or, you can bring those items to the
fairground on Friday the 18th or Saturday the 19th and drop them off at the
donations table.

If you need to contact me directly, call 281 342 2404. I screen my calls

Re: [BVARC] CREATING A COM PORT IN WINDOWS 8.1

2015-01-21 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Randy,

HRD needs to have a port number that you input from the keyboard.

Windows Plug -n- Pray detects a device that is plugged into a USB. It then
sets the device port number and then loads a driver that is supplied when
you load the SignalLink software into your computer.

Your Signallink should have the cable connected and be turned on. Turn on
your computer and then plug the cable into your USB port. If PnP detects
the device, it will appear as a virtual port in the device manager (under
Ports (COM & LPT)) and will indicate its port number. If no port is
indicated, right click on Ports and select (Scan for hardware changes). If
PnP does not find your hardware, something else is wrong.

Give me a call if needed.

Re: [BVARC] Propagation

2014-07-21 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Gayle,

I have found the sun data can be misleading. I listen for beacons at the
low end of the band (between 28.200 and 28.300).
If I hear none, I can be pretty sure there will be no DX. When the band is
open there are many beacons.

There is an excellent article in the November 2014 QST about the Solar
Banners and how to read them.

2014-07-15 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
Ralph, I agree. I was trying to keep my answer short and in doing so I left
out a lot. I just wanted to point out that his radio is most likely
grounded through the house wiring and then to a ground rod close to the
house entry point. As to whether another ground would give better
reception, well, I'm not even going there.

[BVARC] BVARC, TDXS and ECHO 2014 Field Day Wrap Up

2014-07-07 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
QST...QST

Hello to All,

The final FD numbers submitted to ARRL are:
QSO Points 13,374
Bonus Points 1500

This ends the official Field Day Committee and I want to personally thank:

Glenn Anderson - WB5TUF: For supplying the computer equipment and "know
how" that allowed us to record our contacts. Thank You Glenn.

Jack Van Demark - WN5A: A close call in the food department. I'm super
happy that you could make it for the Saturday dinner. Thank You Jack.

John Chauvin - K5IZO and Ross Lawler W5HFF: Most excellent advisors! John,
TU for the historical documentation and Ross, your knowledge of antennas
was invaluable. Thank You.

Jon Noxon - KF5TFJ: Your effort in getting our "stuff" to and from the
field made the FD possible. For without our "stuff", we would have nothing
to talk about. Thank You Jon

Mike Davidson - N5MT: You did most of the heavy lifting. (Inside joke. I'm
healing up just fine.) I really do appreciate the fine job you did for
Operations. Thank You Mike.

Nathan - N5NYV and Stephanie Vessey K5SFV: Nathan, thank you for
introducing us to ICS (Incident Command System). Having a formal Command
Structure made record keeping a breeze. Stephanie, even with your work load
you were able to provide us with accounting forms that served us well.
Thanks To You Both.

Ron Litt - K5HM: Ron, What can I say. Even though you were unable to attend
our FD, You provided us with our Public Information needs in a very
professional manner. Thank You Ron.

Bill - WS5H and Norma - KE5NDN Stone: Bill, TU for taking the reigns of
Bonus Point Captain when we began to falter. Norma, TU for doing all the
jobs that no one else would fill. My hats off to you.

TDXS and ECHO: Thank you gentlemen for your donations and participation in
the FD activities. You helped to make the day a success.

There is so much more that was done by other people. The invisible workers
that don't get mentioned. Rest assured, *I know* you were there and I
cannot thank you all enough, so I'll just say *Thank You All*,

[BVARC] My Side Of The Hurt Feelings Controversy

2014-07-03 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
First, I want to apologize to the two gentlemen that are at the center of
this "Flame War" that occupies so much time on this reflector.

I and the individuals involved, have the only first hand knowledge of
the facts. It was my decisions that created the situations that I will
explain below. I would like for it to be understood that in my defense,
when I took on this job, I knew nothing. Everything was "On The Job
Training" and I had only 60 days to put it together. I knew that mistakes
would be made in some of my decisions and I would receive some flack for
making them. So, to settle the matter, here are the facts about the two
incidents in which I was involved.

*As this controversy applies to Scott Royall:*

After the Field Day Committee had been formed, discussions about what
modes we would operate were held. It was decided that we would have two
RTTY stations, three CW and three Phone. The subject of using PSK was
strongly advised against since prior experience told of interference to
other stations on the field.
Scott contacted me via email about bringing his station. He explained in
great detail about how difficult it would be for him to do this without a
person to dismantle and reassemble his station. Also the disruption of his
caregivers lives. I knew that Scott wanted to use PSK, but we were not
going to have that mode this year and I knew that this would be a great
disappointment to Scott.
I replied to Scott in an email. I told him how much I respected his
abilities in spite of his physical limitations (I really do). I told him I
knew that this decision would be a disappointment to him, but to not let it
get him down. I suggested to him to operate from home on Field Day and I
understand that's exactly what he did.
Unfortunately, Scott continues to complain by using using this reflector
to reveal, what I perceive as a childish attempt at retribution against me
and BVARC.

Scott, directly to you. I am truly sorry for the actions taken by me that
caused you so much hurt. You should hold me responsible and not the club.
It was my decision. I made it and I have to stand behind it.

*As this controversy applies to Travis Burgess:*

Travis, this was a terrible screw-up that I made. I want you to
understand how sorry I am and would give anything if it hadn't happened.

Some background:

As we were trying to gather radios and equipment, Travis volunteered two
radios. He later changed his mind and offered one. He then decided he would
provide a stand alone station. All the emails sent to me by Travis, I
*Replied* to. As FD got closer, I sent several emails to Travis and he did
not reply.
There was also communication between Travis and Mike Davidson
(Operations) so I didn't worry about a no reply from Travis. About a week
before Field Day, I sent Travis an email explaining we would not need his
station after all and not to bring it. I got no reply but thought nothing
of it since he seemed to never reply to me anyway. I went about my business
and forgot about the no reply from Travis.
Friday afternoon, I delivered to the field some antenna poles that
belonged to Travis that I had stored at my home since last year. I went
home from the field late Friday and something triggered my brain to make
sure Travis understood about his station. I sent off an email to him and
went to bed.
Saturday morning, I was shocked to find a rejected notice in my inbox
stating there was no mailbox for the email sent to Travis. I checked my
address book and sure enough, I had his address *wrong. * Why didn't his
ISP reject my other emails? Too late to do anything now so I went to the
field.

Shortly after I arrived at the field, Travis came in with a smile and
raring to go. I was the one that had to give him the news about his station.

Travis just looked at me with no expression on his face and said "I'm
going home". If you know Travis like I do, you know he hides his true
feelings behind a mask of no expression. This makes it hard to know if he
is serious or not. Anyway, I found out later that he, in fact, had gone
home.
In case you don't know, Travis is an excellent photographer and the clubs
official one. Fortunately, other cameras were available but we did miss
Travis. I was disappointed he had abandoned his post.

So there you have it. My firsthand accounting of the events that set this
fire storm in motion.

I want to once again apologise to both of you and to the members of BVARC.
As to who is right and who is wrong, I leave it up to the reader. As the
Chairman of the Field Day Committee, I had to make some hard decisions. I
stand by my actions.

Please give some thought to what I just said and let's put this matter to
bed.

Respectfully,

[BVARC] Friday Field Day Action Plan

2014-06-22 Thread Roy Storey via BVARC
QST...QST

On Friday June 27, we will start to arrive at the field at 4PM. Parking
close to the radio building will be impossible until the firemen leave.
I suggest we assemble at the far north end of the field. You will want to
take the road around the field to grids 8, 12 & 13. We will assess the
situation and plan accordingly. In case you bring an HT, the frequency for
fire field comms. will be 146.400 simplex.

The plan is to set up the radio rooms after the firemen have gone and to
assemble beams. Anything else we can do to get ready for Saturday morning
will be a plus.

Please look out for each other as well as yourself. It will be hot. Bring
an ice chest and water, sunglasses, hat, sunscreen and maybe a snack since
it will be late before we leave.

And we need rope. 1/4 to 3/8 inch for antennas. Large tent stakes if you
have them.

See you on Friday,
