Thanks Matias! I set apache's document root to /var/www/html/cake/app/ webroot and the default layout applied immediately after restarting apache. Thank you very much for your help! I still think your mod_rewrite might be disabled, if you have problem with the urls, recheck your mod_rewrite configuration.
