  SSH accounts neither [ because i can change configurations in the
  whole system... also amazing ]. my client is a university organization
  so they just contract some whatever-people that has no the minor idea
  about anything... don't think they will be able to change the

  about the pretty-urls, i found that solution yesterday, and made it
  work like:http://www.creta.org.tw/index.php/xx/yy/zz
  however, i really would like not to have the 'index.php' in the
  middle... there is no other way to configure it so can work without
  it?

AllowOverride controls the use of .htaccess files, so NO, you cannot
set it there. Contact your hosting provider.

Alternatively you can just uncomment the line in core.php to disable the
pretty urls.

This makes the url's look like
http://yoursite/app_dir/index.php/controller/action
