Re: [Callers] contras for modern square dancers

2017-07-18 Thread Jeanette Mill via Callers
Hi Judy
I called a couple of contras at a square dance festival here in Australia, and
found that I needed to keep calling all the way through, as they were used to
calls being varied through the dance, so would stop dancing if I faded out the
calling. This may not be common to all codes of square dancing.

[Callers] contras for modern square dancers

2017-07-18 Thread Judy Greenhill via Callers
Hi everyone,

I have undertaken to teach some modern square dancers how to contra dance,
and I'm wondering if anyone has experience with this and has any dances to
recommend? I'm a square dancer myself but most of my contra repertoire is
for modern contra dancers- 2 swings, lots of Balance and swing, etc. I'd
like more dances with MWSD moves in them and possibly without any, or only
1, swing, and they don't need to have a partner swing. The dancers I am
teaching are all either plus or advanced, so they will tire pretty quickly
of the usual simple glossary contras I would normally do in a teaching
situation. They can do the moves; it's the formation that is new to them.

Thanks,

Judy

2017-07-18 Thread Jerome Grisanti via Callers
Thanks for your comments.

Rich, I had considered a circle left, and chose the circle right for
similar reasons as Joy as articulated. I do want to test this, particularly
asking people dancing the ladies role about the flow and/or momentum shift
they experience.

Joy, yes, I would certainly be sure to make it clear in teaching that it's
the NEXT neighbor for the roll away. Thanks for your encouragement of a
circle right, I'll let the list know how dancers respond.

I agree that lady leads in a circle left is super smooth - no fiddling
with hands required, just fold in and continue CW momentum into the swing.

Gent leads in circle left is a hand change and I've felt it as being
very awkward. (Spent a whole dance with one of those where partner and
I experimented on how to get it smooth; best two solutions were keeping
hold of the same hand, joining the other hand, and doing a crossed-hand
swing or changing gender roles with partner each time so you could keep
the same hand.)

When gent leads in circle right you don't have to change hands, but when
lady leads you do.

Sorry if this has already been pointed out.

The advantage of circling right before the Neighbor swing in this dance is that
the Ladies lead in the circle in front of the person they will be swinging,
which is always a smoother transition than the Gents leading a circle into a
swing.

The circle right also adds a distinctive flavor to the dance that might
otherwise look a little generic.

Another detail I noticed is that in the A1, it would be helpful for clarity’s
sake to specify that the gents roll away their *new* Neighbor, not the one they
just swung.

Re: [Callers] Fwd: Does This Sequence Exist?

2017-07-18 Thread Alan Winston via Callers
While I agree that you could circle left, it's not quite "just as
easily"; the chain / courtesy turn / circle right has an unbroken flow -
if you do it right; gent has to bring the lady around and point her in
the right direction - and chain/courtesy turn / circle left means you
finish the courtesy turn (CCW rotation), stop, and circle left, although
you can blur that with a twirl rather than a courtesy turn.

I think circle-right-with-lady-in-the-lead is somewhat awkward - you've
got to change hands, which can be facilitated with a star-thru kind of
twirl that damps the circular motion - more awkward than
circle-right-with-gent-in-the-lead but less awkward than circle left
with gent in the lead.

Mark, Andrea,

I too wondered about circle right to a swing, I'll try to get some feedback
from the floor.

As Mark suggests ladies turn back to the B2 swing might work, but in that
case I might as well replace the circle with a star left. A variation worth
trying.

Thanks,

Jerome

Hi, Jerome,

My comments and question are based on my interpretation of the dance that
the progression occurs in A1, when the Gent rolls the NEXT neighbor from L
to R and that the neighbor swing in B2 is with this same (now current)
Neighbor. With that...

It seems to me that the Circle R to Neighbor swing in B2 might be a bit
awkward. The person dancing the Ladies role in particular has quite a
change in momentum. Perhaps the Lady can roll out over her right shoulder
into the swing?

If you have tried this dance with people and up to speed, what sort of
feedback did you get on that transition?
