MWSD offers one option, probably not a term to use in a contra setting.

*Arky Star Thru* is a position dependent (rather than dance role dependent
version):

>From Facing Couples.
Beaus do the Boys part, and Belles do the Girls part of a Star Thru.
(Everybody uses the inside hand)
Ends in Facing Couples.
https://www.ceder.net/oldcalls/viewsingle.php?RecordId=155

This is not exactly what you asked for, which is to use the OTHER HAND than
typical of your role, but independent of your position.

*Left Star Thru (edited slightly)*
>From a boy facing a girl: boy holds left hand up and girl places her right
palm against it. boy steps forward and does a quarter left as the girl
passes the boy left shoulders under the raised arms and does a quarter
right. Finishes as a couple.
https://www.ceder.net/oldcalls/viewsingle.php?RecordId=3616

Note that Bob Isaacs uses "Jersey Twirl" for a wrong-side California Twirl
with the Lark going under.

Note that California Twirl (and Jersey Twirl) are 180˚ turns, while Star
Thru and Arky Star Thru are 90˚ turns.

[Callers] 2 new contra dance compositions

2018-08-16 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
Both of these have been road tested on tour with Polaris.

*Serving REELness*

Andy Shore

Type: Contra

Formation: Duple-Improper

Level: Intermediate

A1 ---

(16) Neighbor balance and swing

A2 ---

(8) Revolving Door - Ladies in center by the right but**

(8) 1/2 Hey, pass partner by left

B1 ---

(16) Partner balance and swing

B2 ---

(8) Circle Left 3/4 and pass through along the set

(8) [Next] Neighbor Do-si-do

Notes: **release revolving door a little early so that Gents are in the
opposite Lady’s spot & have time to turn toward their right (tight loop) to
come in for the left shoulder pass

I'd introduce Revolving Doors with a simpler dance that goes into a Swing.
E.g., the RD variation of Bronwyn Wood's "The Missing Piece"

The world premiere with walk thru & dance was captured on video by Doug
Plummer here: https://youtu.be/uAZCZzm1tI8
Not mentioned in that debut was the early release of the Gents from
Revolving Door and their tight loop to the right

The title comes from the FX TV show "Pose".

*Alpha Ursae Minoris*

Andy Shore

Type: Contra

Formation: Becket-CCW [no circle]

Level: Advanced (Weekend/Challenging level)

* ID shadow beyond partner in becket

A1 ---

(8) Promenade across the Set (J hook to progress)

(8) Mad Robin - ladies in front

A2 ---

(8) Neighbor RH Across - Balance & Box the Gnat (don't let go)

(8) with N & Shadow, Square Thru 4 (no balances) - make the 4th hand an
Allemande Left 1/2 w/ Shadow

[to long waves with Gents facing OUT, partner in RH, shadow in LH]

B1 ---

(4,4) Balance the Wave, Box Circulate

(8) Neighbor swing

B2 ---

(4,2) [1/4 ricochet hey] Gents go in and push back on diagonal, Ladies
Cross passing Left

(10) Swing Partner

Notes: ** when out with partner, cross over & be ready for Balance & Box
the Gnat to be there for Square thru with Shadow & P

Take time to ID N & Shadow for square thru = the ONLY 2 people you touch!
This is outside your minor set!

This is a high piece count dance with little chance for recovery. *Not for
the faint of heart! *Probably should introduce figures in other dances
first - Mad Robin, Square Thru, ricochet hey, Box Circulate

Named after Polaris (the band) who helped me finalize this dance. Alpha
Ursae Minoris is another name for Polaris, the pole star.

Enjoy!

As someone who came to contra from MWSD, here's my list of things that come
from MWSD or have that feel:

box circulate
pass the ocean (especially with no balances, especially followed by Swing
Thru)
square thru (with no balances) Chris Page's Square Route comes to mind
box the gnat (& swat the flea)
star thru
california twirl
do-si-do 1.25 to a wave
cross trail thru (aka cross trails)
hinge (as in Chris Page's Serendipity, Bob Isaacs' Hinge Binge)

all 8 circulate (Bob Isaacs' 4x4 "Circulate Eight")

Hope that helps!

Re: [Callers] 2 New Dances (with a new move?)

2018-05-22 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
Tom, I should have been more explicit.

Revolving Doors had been covered in this list before... here is some text
by Frannie Marr from a few years ago:

Ron Buchanan's "Revolving Door" figure is described well by Rick Mohr. In
"Revolving Door", couples start a "wrong side" half promenade where women
pass right instead of men passing left. As the women meet they catch right
hands and allemande right once around. The men drop out after crossing the
set, and partners swing as the women come around. It flows easily and feels
good. I often do a floor demo, both because it's unfamiliar and because
it's pretty cool to watch. Since the promenade only lasts for a beat or two
I think the easiest hold is for neighbors to join left hands, with the
man's right arm briefly behind the woman's back.
Dances that include that figure are

Puttin' Cheese on the Ritz by Ron Buchanan
Glenside Promenade by Ron Buchanan
Gaye's Groove by Rick Mohr
Cup of Joe by Rick Mohr
Better Late than Never by Steve Z-A
Not a Trip to Vegas by Chris Page

My "mod" is that rather than lead into a swing, it blends into that spread
action.

As for Mad Robin after a Swing, I have several dances with that combination:

Cricket's Flight by Don Veino
Fiddlers' Fling by Cary Ravitz
Mad Robin Landing by Will Mentor
Pigtown Pousette by Cary Ravitz & others
Robin on a Wire by Will Mentor

[Callers] 2 New Dances (with a new move?)

2018-05-21 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
I thought up a cool little ending to a Revolving Door and have incorporated
it into a couple of new dances. I call the action "Revolving Door to a
Wave" and it's as follows:

from couples facing across - Ladies start an Allemande Right 1x while
depositing the gent they were with on the other side, as the ladies come
back across and are finishing, they slide nose-to-nose past the other gent
(who has turned a 3/4 turn to their right) to put the gents in the middle
of a wave across. Gents have left hands in the middle and right hands with
the lady they did not start with. If you are familiar with MWSD, it feels a
bit like the call Spread. Here are the dances that use it. Only the
second has been road-tested.

Please share your reactions.

Re: [Callers] Gender Free MWSD

2017-10-04 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
See http://www.iagsdchistory.org/historywiki/index.php?title=Gender_Roles
for a discussion of gender roles and gender terminology in general, and use
in the LGBTQ* clubs that make up the IAGSDC in particular.

Boys/Girls, Gents/Ladies, Men/Women are used very interchangeably in MWSD.

Belles/Beaus DO NOT mean the same thing (see above article and CALLERLAB
definitions).

To my knowledge there are no MWSD clubs that use truly non-gendered terms.
Upwards of 99.9% of callers would not be able to easily call to such a
group, nor would such dancers be able to travel anywhere else and dance.

So to my question: How do the dancers identify which roles the other people
are dancing? Traditionally this is done with dancers taking the opposite
role to their gender wearing bands, but that is surely inappropriate if the
dance is GF.

Dancers dance their own part. Period. Full stop. Most dancers are somewhat
capable of tracking the arrangement of dancers within the ever changing
formations of MWSD. If a caller says "boys u-turn back", a dancer only has
to know their own gender role. If a caller says "centers trade" a dancer
only has to know their own position, and determine who is the other center.
If a caller says "boys trade" a boy dancer must determine who is the "other
boy" they must work with (not that different from the centers example). If
dancers aren't 100% sure who that person is, they will self-identify
(calling out "boy!") while the other boys do the same, thus knowing who
they must trade with. This works very smoothly in practice and is not a
problem.

Hope that helps!

[Callers] New Dance

(8) Neighbor swing
A2 ---
(8) Promenade across = face partner across
(8) Mad Robin - Women passing in front
B1 ---
(4,4) Partner RH Balance and Box the Gnat
(8) Right & left through - COURTESY TURN SOMEONE NEW*
B2 ---
(8) Women Do-si-do 1.5x
(8) Partner swing
Notes: when out with partner - cross over and get in with the balance & box
the gnat
(or just wait to turn/be turned)

* note that courtesy turn is with your new neighbor
this is the progression

It looks simple but the surprise factor of the R&L thru can be challenging.
The fact that there are 2 courtesy turning actions both ending facing
partner (promenade & R&L thru) add to the difficulty.

[Callers] Modern Western Square Dance for Contra Dancers

2017-03-18 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
I realize this post qualifies as both shameless self-promotion, as well as
possible improper use of this list for (somewhat) commercial purposes, but
I do think this topic may be of particular interest to contra and trad
callers and choreographers. Scold me if you must.

I'll be teaching a special weeklong workshop at CDSS American Dance and
Music Week at Pinewoods (Plymouth, MA) August 8-15, 2017 titled "Modern
Western Square Dance for Contra Dancers".

This course is an intensive “blitz” exposure to Modern Western Square
Dancing (MWSD) for experienced contra dancers, traditional square dancers,
and contra or trad callers. If you enjoy learning new choreography and the
unexpected delights of no-walk-thru contra medleys, this is for you.
Starting with the 25 or so contra calls that are shared with Modern Western
squares, we will explore much of the CALLERLAB Basic, Mainstream, and Plus
lists. New calls will be taught and workshopped, but you’ll get plenty of
time to “just dance” and enjoy what you have already learned in both patter
and singing call contexts. The pace of the course will be determined by the
students’ ability to assimilate the material, but the goal will be that you
can dance most Mainstream calls smoothly at speed. We will cover several of
the more popular Plus calls as well. Expect to be challenged and have lots
of fun!

Modern Western uses recorded music of various genres; the patter music is
designed to get you moving at a continuous flow and the singing call music
allows for a change of pace. The class time will be divided into an all
morning workshop session where we will learn new figures, then a late
afternoon practice and review session. You will have the middle of the day
to relax or enjoy other workshops at American Week.

More details at the CDSS site:
http://www.cdss.org/programs/dance-music-song-camps/camp-weeks/mwsd

This class may be of particular interest to contra and trad callers and
choreographers. Many MWSD moves have been "borrowed" into contra and
several contra choreographers who have had experience with MWSD have
written dances that have components inspired by MWSD moves. (Carol Ormand,
Bob Isaacs, and Chris Page to name a few.) Some of the moves that come from
MWSD are: box circulate, pass the ocean, square thru, star thru, California
twirl, hinge... If you'd like to stir your creative juices, or just learn a
bit more about some of the calls and their applications, this is a great
way to do so. Learning about the added rigor of MWSD may improve your own
teaching and presentation skills, as well as give you new insights into
contra and trad choreography.

Space in this class is limited. Registration is currently open.

I taught a similar weekend workshop in Durham NC in 2011 with many contra &
trad callers in attendance. Here is my "trip report" (on facebook) from
that weekend

Re: [Callers] caller suggestions for beginner handout

2016-04-21 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
I don't know how well this can be communicated in a handout, but one thing
I always try to say when I lead a beginners session is that my #1 goal is
for them to have fun, and that my #2 goal is for them to come back!

I say:

I hope you will come back and do this again, because it all makes more
sense the second time you come dancing. You'll understand the terminology
better, the feel of the moves, the pace of the dancing, and it will all
start to click into place. So I hope you'll have fun, and I hope you will
come back again.

I hope that is useful,

[Callers] does this dance exist?

(Sent this to Chris Page a week ago and no answer!.. so I'm asking the hive
mind.)
Using the G-word until there's a widely accepted substitute that doesn't
need a footnote to explain.

from a dance-writing session led by Jeff Spero at a recent dance camp...

This Was Your Idea

Contra/ Duple Improper

A1 ---
(8) Gypsy Neighbor1 Right 1.5
(8) Gypsy Neighbor2 Left 1.5
A2 ---.

B1 ---
(4) Give & Take to Lady's Side
(12) Partner swing
B2 ---
(8) Right and left through
(8) Balance the ring and spin to the right (petronella) to face N2

Note that the progression happens in A2.
The Petronella into a (right shoulder) Gypsy seems unusual. I don't have
any dances in my collection that do that. Dancing it with a test group
seemed to be fine.

This is not correct. Current CALLERLAB definitions include styling that
includes "eye contact"

>From the current CALLERLAB Basic/Mainstream definitions (revised May 31,
2013) available for download at callerlab.org:
[my emphasis added with underlining]

*26. Walk Around the Corner*
*Starting formations:* Squared Set, Infacing Circle Of 8

*Command examples:* Walk Around the Corner
Walk All Around Your Corner
4 Ladies Chain; Circle Left; Walk Around New Corner
All Around the Left Hand Lady
Walk All Around the Left Hand Lady; See Saw the Pretty Little Taw

*Dance action: *Dancers face their corners. *Walking forward and around
each other while keeping right shoulders adjacent,* dancers return to their
original position, with their backs toward their corner. [underlining mine]

*Ending formation: *Right and Left Grand Circle

*Timing:* 8

*Styling:* Men hold arms in natural dance position. Women use both hands on
skirt, moving skirt forward and back to avoid opposite dancer. *Dancers
should maintain eye contact over their shoulders until their partners
become visible.* [underlining mine]

*Comment: *Square dancing is evolving towards a preference for "Walk Around
the Corner" instead of "All Around The Left-Hand Lady", which requires the
women to mentally translate the command to "All Around The Right-Hand Man".

While I'm not suggesting we adopt the MWSD nomenclature (in particular, the
left-shoulder version is called "See Saw" in current MWSD which is
something different in current contra), I do want to point out that the
dance action is exactly what we desire for a right-shoulder gy--y. The only
difference is that MWSD it is essentially restricted to exactly 1x around,
and in contra gy--y is 'as far as directed'.

Re: [Callers] Radio stations

There used to be a good podcast called "Music From the Contradance"
It looks like the archives are still online and downloadable from a few
places...

Re: [Callers] Rolling Starts?

2015-10-12 Thread Andy Shore via Callers
I've found this thread very informative, thanks for all the thoughtful
observations.

Having just returned from a weekend as a dancer, I can add one more:

It is indeed possible to over-use rolling starts!
