Webster Hall Reel, by Don Theyken. Not sure if it's OK to share so
publicly, so I'll send it to you offline.

It has a lovely English-y move to get into the CC. Looks simple on the
card, but can be quite disorienting for newer or otherwise
geographically-challenged dancers.

[Callers] How to Use Archives? Are they working?

2017-09-23 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi all,

Are the Sharedweight Archives working? I can't seem to get any searches to
return results.

I tried to search the archives for various square dance moves, but kept
getting 0 results. So I tried terms that really ought to return results and
still got nothing.

For example: when I search for the word "ladies", I get 0 (zero) results.
Same when I search for the word "chain". Just to see if it mattered, I
tried with and without quotes and both upper and lower cases...no dice!

The few options available for entering search criteria would seem to limit
the possibility to screw it up. So I"m scratching my head on this.

Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks.

[Callers] Contra Dances with Modern Western Square Dance Figures

2017-09-23 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi all,

I'm preparing for a workshop at a dance weekend in November where the theme
will be contra dances that incorporate square dance moves.

I have a number dances with square thrus and swing thrus and box
circulates. However, these moves are fairly well known at this point. This
will be an advanced group of dancers so I'm looking for dances that
incorporate more unique and sophisicated moves.

I know Bob Isaacs has several that quality, with dances that use Spin the
Top and Spin Chain Exchange the Gears.

Looking forward to seeing what you may have.

Re: [Callers] Does This Sequence Exist?

2017-07-18 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi, Jerome,

My comments and question are based on my interpretation of the dance that
the progression occurs in A1, when the Gent rolls the NEXT neighbor from L
to R and that the neighbor swing in B2 is with this same (now current)
Neighbor. With that...

It seems to me that the Circle R to Neighbor swing in B2 might be a bit
awkward. The person dancing the Ladies role in particular has quite a
change in momentum. Perhaps the Lady can roll out over her right shoulder
into the swing?

If you have tried this dance with people and up to speed, what sort of
feedback did you get on that transition?

Hi, Jeremy,

The Lavender Country and Folk Dancers (LCFD) use some positional references
in their gender-free English Country Dances. Might want to check it out:

Looking forward to hearing more about this as others respond.

[Callers] Allen Ortep's First Contra

2017-06-18 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi all,

Allen Ortep's First Contra was shared with this group in November, 2012.
Just wondering if anyone has successfully called this dance. I ask because
I've tried a few times with some adventurous and skilled dancers and have
never gotten it to work. So I'm wondering if I have the instructions right.

I tried searching the SharedWeight archives and am not getting any results.
(In fact, I get no results even if I search for Contra. So now I'm feeling
very technologically challenged!)

Below are the instructions as I copied then and then double-checked them.at
the time.

Does anyone see any mistakes or have any other thoughts? Thanks.

Re: [Callers] I think this might work....

Looks like a nice dance, Kelsey. The pushback/ricochet into a swing is one
of my favorite combinations of moves.

I must say, however, that I'm not familiar with the Jersey twirl. It is
just a CA twirl, but with the opposite hands, and then you use the joined
hands (Gent's left, Lady's right) to pull into the swing?

Thanks again for sharing! :)

Re: [Callers] Full hey spanning two phrases?

2017-03-29 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi, Maia,

At the risk of this not being exactly what you're looking for in a dance,
I'll share Julie's Gypsies.

The ladies dance the path of a full hey path across the A1 and A2 phrases.
I even describe it to the ladies as tracing the path of a hey. However, the
gents stay on their side.

I've had lots of complements and no mentions of concern about the figure
crossing the phrases. Perhaps it's different enough from a hey as it's
called and taught more at the component figure level as opposed to a single
figure.

In any case, wanted to share in case you found it helpful.

*4. Julie’s Gypsies, Mark Hillegonds, Improper*
START: (Long waves, L face in, G face out, N in RH)
A1: Long waves balance R & L, N alle R 1x / Ladies pass L SH, Partner

A2: Ladies pass L SH, Neighbor swing
B1: Circle Left 3/4 / Partner swing
B2: Ladies chain (to Neighbor) / LH Star 1x (to new Neighbor in RH)

Re: [Callers] Difficult dancers - Decision to ask not to return

2017-03-08 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Lots of thoughtful discussion and ideas about how to incorporate difficult
dancers.

Splitting this into another variant of this discussion...

So...what happens if all of the attempts to shepherd and coach and "angel"
the difficult dancer do not work and their skills and abilities continue to
be a significant negative impact when they're dancing.

Would you ever (or have you ever) asked someone not to return based on
their inability to dance?

I realize "inability" is a broad term and I intended it to be so for this
question. There are lots of reasons why someone may not be able to know
what to do and/or to be able to keep up when dancing and may not even be
able to improve.

Is there some point at which you as organizers would consider and
ultimately such a decision?

Inspired by Marie's other thread, I wonder what tools callers use when they

who is having so much difficulty but who leaves confused dancers in their

program accordingly? Something else?

Re: [Callers] Variations of 3-33 by Steve Zakon-Anderson

2016-12-16 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi,

I have always used the original version and don't ever recall the dancers
having trouble with the DSD progression. While I respect and admire the
folks creating variants they find helpful for their needs, for me, if it
ain't broke, I'm not going to fix it.

Also, I must say that pleased me greatly to see Maia's reference to my home
town of Ann Arbor!!! :)

Fwiw, if I were to write a variation of 3-33-33 (and wanted to avoid ladies

lines (8), P alle. R 3/4 (4), ladies alle. L 1/2 (4). Agreed that ladies'
allemande L out of long lines, while there's no reason it doesn't flow, is
bizarrely counterintuitive!

[Callers] Dances without LLFB and Ladies Chain

2016-12-07 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi all,

Following on the recent inquiries about favorite dances that [INSERT
CRITERIA HERE], I'll post my request.

I'm finding that when I put programs together, I'll have a string (or at
least several) dances that have a LL F or a Ladies Chain and sometimes
both.

I'd be interested to know your favorite dances (of any experience level)
that use neither of these figures.

Thanks and Happy Holidays to all!

Re: [Callers] 4 person do-si-do?

2015-12-01 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Hi, Luke,

Great to see you at ValleyCopia and ContraCopia this past weekend. Enjoyed
your sets! :)

Carol Ormand wrote a dance with a double do-si-do. I'm afraid I can't
remember the name and I don't have my cards handy at the moment. It's in
either Jurassic Redheads or Lizard Research Institute.

I also danced it and remember that it took some time to teach and was
rather technical. By technical, I mean that every time we got to that move
in the dance, I felt like I had to drop out of the flow and pay attention
to the mechanics of the move and to avoiding the other dancers. When it
worked, it was *really* cool. More often than not, however, it was more
like just avoiding the other dancers and getting back to place in time.

Not suggesting that it doesn't or can't work, just that you'll want to
teach it very clearly and make sure it fits into and adds value to the
dance's story line.

Thanks for keeping the creative juices going.

Re: [Callers] Giant dance database?

2014-07-29 Thread Mark Hillegonds via Callers
Maia,

If you're not limited to a database project, you might consider a project of a
more graphical nature. It would useful to have an application that can
interpret dance instructions and generate a video of the dance.

There are 1 or 2 very simple ones out there, but graphics are poor and they
have a limited set of instructions.

Also, is this an assignment or otherwise something you want to do yourself. In
other words, would you be open to others assisting with this project.
