Note that right and left diagonal relative to the the do-si-dos are just within
the foursome, not like the couple left diagonal. I should probably have edited
that out.

Re: [Callers] Looking for a particular sort of becket dance

2017-06-30 Thread John Sweeney via Callers
Hi Kalia,
I see you have loads of responses already! Here are a few easy ones
from my files that I believe meet your criteria:

Bases Loaded (by Jim Saxe, Lydee Scudder, and Tom Thoreau)
Contra; Becket (CW)
Start by turning the circle of four 1/8 AC so
that you face another couple on the left diagonal
A1: Forward with Partner (3), turn and take Neighbour(1), Back (2), back
slowly with a zesty Roll-Away with a Half Sashay (2)
  Repeat
A2: Repeat; Repeat
B1: Same four: Ladies’ Chain x2 (don’t worry about lines)
B2: Partner Dosido; Partner Swing – finish facing new couple on left
diagonal

There is no Way to Peace; Peace is the Way (by Erik Hoffman)
Contra; Becket (CW)
Men: Look on your Left Diagonal – that is who you link with
A1: Ladies Dosido; Partner Swing
A2: Men Allemande Left 1 & ½; Neighbour Swing
B1: Long Lines Forward & Back
Ladies link Right elbows and turn 1 & ½
B2: Ladies pick up Partner in a Star Promenade ¾
Men who are approaching now link Left elbows to Star Promenade Partner ¾
Push off to Butterfly Whirl on own side
Note: The second couple with whom you Star Promenade is the couple with whom
the dance starts again
This dance is easier than it sounds. It has proved good for mixed level
dancers because beginners can get into it, and the flow and unique quality
of the dance keeps experienced dancers interested. The consecutive star
promenades need a bit of space.

Fairport Harbour (by Paul Balliet)
Contra; Becket CW
A1: Men Allemande Left 1 & 1/2; Pick up Neighbour for Grand Promenade
(around the whole set – neutral couples join in)
A2: Ladies Turn Back (Back Track/Cast) & Gypsy Meltdown with the Man behind
– finish facing back
B1: Grand Promenade back until Partner is opposite (if you are with your
partner then you are a neutral couple at the end)
 Ladies’ Chain to your partner
B2: Pass Through across the set; Partner Swing

Balance the Star #2 (by McLain Family)
Sicilian Circle/Becket-CW
Start holding hands across in Right-Hand Star
A1: Balance In and Out x2; Star Right
A2: Balance In and Out x2; Star Left
B1: Ladies Dosido; Men Dosido
B2: Circle Left; Slide Left to a New Couple (time for clogging!)

Fruit Punch (by Diane Silver (?))
Contra; Becket
A1: Yearn to New Neighbors on the Left Diagonal; Fall Back
  Ladies Allemande Right 1 & 1/2
A2: Neighbour Balance & Swing
B1: Balance the Ring; Pass the Ocean
Balance the Wave (R/L); Swing Through
B2: Partner Balance & Swing

Finding Your Balance (by John Sweeney) - intended for teaching purposes to
get people around four changes of right and lefts with plenty of time
Contra; Becket
A1/A2: Four Changes with Balances - Start Right with Neighbour
B1: Balance the Ring; Men Cross
  Balance the Ring; Ladies Cross
B2: Half Promenade (OR R & L Through)
Yearn on the Left Diagonal to New Neighbours

Grapevine Jig (by John Sweeney, based on Don Armstrong & Mick Peat)
Contra; Becket
Hold hands in Long Lines
A1: Grapevine: (R to side, L behind, R to side, L kick) x4
A2: Long Lines Go Forward & Back – with a bow
  Ladies’ Chain
B1: Circle Left; Star Right* – Men Drop Out
B2: Ladies’ Chain to Partner; Yearn on the Left Diagonal
* Make it easier with a Circle Right

I hope you find something useful there.

Happy dancing,
John

Re: [Callers] Looking for a particular sort of becket dance

2017-06-30 Thread Martha Wild via Callers
Kalia, Don’t know if any of these will suit. It’s for new callers, not
necessarily new dancers, so the first may be too family dance oriented.

All of the following are Becket formation

My variant of Balance the Star #2 by the McLain Family (at least that’s the
title I have for it). I changed the order of the stars, and also the first
do-si-do that was left shoulder, as why make it more confusing?
A1 Take left hands in a star, balance the star twice
Star left once around
A2 Take right hands in a star, balance the star twice
Star right once around
B1 Ladies do-si-do by the right shoulder (Neighbor do-si-do, if you have
kids and adults and genders all mish-mashed)
Gents do-si-do once around (partner do-si-do if did neighbor)
B2 Circle left once around
Slice left to the next couple

Bride and Groom Reel
Merri Rudd

A1 Circle Left 3/4
Swing neighbor
A2 Ladies allemande right
Swing partner
B1 Ladies chain
Chain back
B2 Long lines forward and back
Slice left

Is This Reel?
Christine Hale
A1 Do-si-do partner
Swing partner
A2 Circle left once
Ladies chain
B1 Long lines forward and back
Swing the NEXT neighbor (not the one you chained to)
B2 Promenade across the set
Gents allemande left 1 1/2

Note that this could be a non-Becket if it started at B1. Also A1 could be
balance and swing partner or spiral (we’ve been using this in lieu of the
g-word) and swing partner.

Jan and Dean
I don’t know the author

A1 Long lines
Circle left 3/4, bottom couple arch, top couple pops through
A2 Four in line down the hall with the next couple, turn alone and come back
B1 Circle left once
Ladies chain
B2 Ladies do-si-do once
Swing partner

North Cascades
Penn Fixx

A1 On the left diagonal, right and left through
Across the set, right and left through
A2 Long lines forward and back
Ladies chain
B1 Ladies do-si-do 1 1/2 (this could also be a spiral) to end up in neighbor
lady’s place
Circle left once around
B2 Balance and swing partner

Square Affair (slight variant)
Becky Hill

A1 Slice left
Ladies chain
A2 Balance your partner, half square through
Balance your partner, half square through
B1 Balance and swing NEW neighbor facing you
B2 Circle left 3/4
Swing partner

Let me try this again. Coal Country Contra by Ron Buchanan

A1: women Rh pull across, neighbor Allemand left 1.5, men alm R 1.5

A2: partner balance and swing

B1: R thru, partner rollaway(W rolls left), men Dosado (and men stand still
in place)

B2: women Dosado and walk behind her partner to stand on his right side
(progression CCW), lines forward and back (adjusting to face new couple across)

This is almost what you're looking for and was in fact specifically
designed for criteria very similar to what you're asking for. The only
problem (which may or may not be a problem for your use-case) is that
because this was the very first contra I wrote, I didn't realize that it
was double-progression...

I'll also note that experienced contra dancers often have difficulty
with the California Twirl because they expect to only do that facing
up/down the set rather than across the set. (Usually that doesn't break
the dance because they do a courtesy turn instead, just makes for poor
flow with the left allemande 1 1/2.)

Panix Dot Chat (cal...@aahz.ws)

Becket formation
Double-progression, better with odd number of couples

A1 Right-and-left thru on left diagonal (8)
(Yes, start with progression)
(Warn ends about not moving)
Right-and-left thru new couple (8)
A2 Circle left 3/4 (8)
Swing neighbor (8)
B1 Pass through (4)
California twirl (4)
Men left-hand turn once-and-half (8)
B2 Balance and swing partner (16)

(Usually A1 is called as "left diagonal R thru; straight ahead, R
back".)

Re: [Callers] Looking for a particular sort of becket dance

2017-06-29 Thread Joy Greenwolfe via Callers
Hi Kalia,

I have a Becket contra dance I’ve used at Community dances that is very
forgiving, yet has interesting movement. The only name I have for it is Luke
Donev’s ONS Becket.

Luke Donev’s ONS Becket
Longways contra Becket formation

A1 Partner Dosido
Partner Swing

A2 Long lines forward and back
Neighbor Dosido across

B1 Circle R !
Circle L (until back on the side of the set with partner)

B2 Long lines Yearn on L diagonal to new Neighbors, back up across from Ns.
Star R with these new Neighbors (if there’s time) until back on the
side of the set with your partner.

I have a note that Luke says if you “double yearn” to L diagonal Neighbors, and
back out on the L diagonal, it becomes a double progression dance.
Of course, a full yearn actually passes two neighbors, but the dance can be
adapted for either scenario: to new Neighbors for beginners, and a full yearn
for a double progression for more experienced dancers.

When teaching this to newbees, I’ve taught the star as “if there’s time.”
There’s usually time.

Here are two Becket dances which are somewhat unusual but still easy to
call and robust to dance. These might be considered a "step up" for a
beginner caller - something to grow into from straight glossary material -
requiring a more thought out walk-through/teach.

-Don

*Tranquility - Linda Leslie*
Contra/Becket-CW/Easy (6/17/2000 Sandwich, MA)

A1 Long lines forward & back
Gents allemande left once and a half
A2 Neighbor Balance & Swing
B1 Pass through to an ocean wave
   Balance
   Walk forward
   New Wave Balance
B2 Ladies allemande left one-half (or once and a half)
   Partner Swing
(I recommend the 1+1/2 for the easier timing)

Wavy Star Slice – Becket – Don Veino 20170120

*Type:* Contra Dance, Becket Left/CW Formation

*A1*
(8) Slice left (Fwd on left diagonal, fall straight back)
(4,4) Fwd to Wavy Star*, Balance

*A2*
Star CW 3/4x (Gents forward, Ladies back up 3 places)
N Swing

*B1*
L Chain to P
Circle RIGHT 1x

*B2*
Partner Balance & Swing

*AKA “Gypsy Star” – Take hands in wave with same role N, Gents below
Ladies, for an interleaved wave facing opposite role N. Let go of outside
hands (the one touching adjacent hands/4 folks) and retake hands with
opposite role N before rotating the star.

This is my go-to ending dance, and I love it. It does, however, start
with the dread circle left 3/4, which I'm trying to avoid in this case.

Another truly excellent dance. I considered this one, but thought the
timing subtleties of the zig-zag to allemande might get away from a
hesitant new caller. As a fairly new trainer-of-callers, I'm uncertain
about how much complexity they can handle. I know I was a total mess on
my first few camper-night attempts. Anything that needed teaching
beyond the very basics would have been out of my league. But there are
often callers in classes who've got the basics down and are looking for
a bit more of a challenge.

Hooray, another good candidate! The star promenade is an excellent

Hi Kalia,

Here are two easy dances that may look similar at first glance but are
actually pretty different:

1. Hot Buttered Rolls
Perry Shafran

A1:
slice left, rollaway P on the way back (ladies)
long lines forward, rollaway P on the way back (gents)
A2:
ladies allemande right 1+1/2
N swing
B1:
circle left 3/4
P do si do
B2:
P balance, swing

2. Pizza Shop
Yoyo Zhou

A1:
slice left
ladies chain
A2:
ladies allemande right 1
N swing
B1:
down the hall; turn as couples
B2:
circle left 3/4
P swing

Cheers,
Yoyo Zhou

[Callers] Looking for a particular sort of becket dance

2017-06-29 Thread Kalia Kliban via Callers

Hi all,

I'm re-vamping my list of simple contra dances for new callers, and am
in search of a very particular sort of becket dance. The list is one of
my hand-outs for callers' classes at camps, so the folks who'll be using
it are likely to be nervous, brand-new callers. To that end, I'm
looking for sturdy, hard-to-break, low-piece-count dances. In a perfect
world they'd be composed of simpler glossary figures.

I already have a fair collection of simple dances to choose from, but
would like to include one more becket dance (I have Tica Tica Timing
already on the list). This perfect becket that I'm looking for should
_not_ start with circle L 3/4, and should not contain petronella twirls.
Bonus points if it doesn't have a whole hey, since I've already got a
couple of whole hey dances in the list.

I look forward to hearing what you can recommend.
Many thanks,
Kalia Kliban
