Hi all,

Just found a dance card with no name, and I'm sure somebody out there
can plug it into the dance-o-matic* and tell me what it is.

A1 N b
A2 M alle L 1-1/2; P sw
B1 Lines of 4 down the hall, turn as cpls, return and bend.
B2 Balance ring, circle L 1/2; Ladies chain

Kalia Kliban
*and wouldn't that be a good name for a dance?

It's the correct spelling for "many thanks" in Danish, which is
what the title is based on.

The dance Maia asked about has a clear resemblance to "Mange Tak"
but also is clearly different, with more balances (which Maia
says she definitely recalls) and with no shadow allemande.  It's
apparently an intentionally written variation, perhaps to achieve
a little simplification, since Maia collected it from Ron
Buchanan's calling, and it's unlikely he would unwittingly have
called a folk-processed garbling of his own dance.  I don't know
whether this variation is one that Ron came up with himself nor
whether it has a more specific title than something like "Mange
Tak (variation)".

2015-12-07 Thread Maia McCormick via Callers
Oh! I believe that the B2 was a do-si-do and swing, actually (misremembered
it because my partner and I changed it). Which makes the dance as I recall
it:
A1: pass the ocean and balance
partner R 1/2, gents L 1/2, balance
A2: neighbor R 3/4, new neighbor swing
B1: pass the ocean and balance
neighbor R 1/2, gents L 1/2, balance
B2: partner do-si-do
partner swing

And it DOES look similar to Mongatock (Manga Tak?), I agree, but I
definitely recall reforming and balancing waves after both of the
pass-the-ocean/allemande sequences.

I wrote to Jim Kitch and he confirmed that the dance is indeed "Spare Parts"
as Will Mentor indicated. I'm posting a part of Jim's reply below because I
thought his comments on R through interesting.

>From Jim Kitch:

Will Mentor is absolutely correct; the dance you are asking about is "Spare
Parts", which I wrote (in the late 1980's or very early 1990's, I believe)
for a band of the same name that I was calling with at the time. [Will M.
has the choreography correct as well.]

BTW, IMHO a pass-through-and-twirl IS a right-and-left-through -- at least,
it is what the majority of dancers do today when a right-and-left-through is
called for. (I'm ignoring the with/without hands question, the norm of
which varies depending on where you are.) I only specify the California
twirl in "Spare Parts" because, in that dance, it sets up the next action
much better than a conventional courtesy turn does.

Re: [Callers] Mystery Dance

2010-03-24 Thread Jack Mitchell
Actually before the allemande, you're standing with your partner in your
right hand, so the gents are facing the right way and the ladies are
facing the wrong way. After the allemande, you're both facing the same
way and ready to walk forward to a new wave. Without needing to say
anything about it, one thing you can do to reduce confusion about which
way folks are going is to becketize the sets by circling RIGHT one place
rather than left. That way the 1's are actually progressing down the
hall and the 2's are going up the hall. The progression has you (once
you're becketized) progressing to the right one couple each time through
the dance. Might be worth it to point out your next neighbors (on the
right diagonal) just before starting the walkthru.

Take all this bearing in mind that I just got the dance myself and
haven't called it before.

Hi Jack,

My suggested fix is no good :-(

I think this would fix it
B2: Balance the Ring, Petronella Turn
Balance the Ring, Petronella Turn and a 1/2 more
but with this suggestion, I think it's too clockwise.

B2: LLFB, right hand balance, and square thru 2 would be nicer

Cheers, Bill

Hi Jack,

Salmonella Evening by Steve Zakon-Anderson has the same A1, A2 and B2
but B1: Balance the Ring, Petronella Twirl Balance the Ring, Petronella Twirl

Your mystery dance doesn't progress.
It would work if B2 was
Balance Ring, Petronella Twirl
Balance Ring, California Twirl

Cheers, Bill

Hi Jack,

I think there is a problem with the
progression in the mystery dance. The partner
swing is on the ladies side, so B2 leaves people
on the wrong side. Using a B2: Gents Allemand Left
1 1/2, Neighbor swing would fix it, but the dance
still is a mystery.

A few dances that have a progression at A1
and then the same A2 and B1 are:

Hey in the Barn Chart Guthrie Improper
A1 Neighbor Balance and Swing
B2 Ladies Chain, 1/2 Hey

Pinewoods Crossing Jim Kitch, et alImproper
A1 Neighbor Gypsy 1 1/2, Circle Left
B2	Circle Left 3/4 Ladies Roll Away (L to R, on
side) Pass Through Across, Cross Trails* Pass your
partner by the right, pass neighbor by left

Pride of CharlottesvilleSeth Tepfer Improper
A1	Neighbor Seesaw (Left shoulder DSD) Neighbor
Allemand Left 1 1/2
B2	Gents Allemand Left 1 1/2 Neighbor Allemand
Right 1 3/4

Southern Swing Steve Zakon-AndersonImproper
A1 (new) Neighbor Balance and Swing
B2	Ladies Allemand Right, Pass Partner by Left
Gents pass by Right, Neighbor Allemand Left 1 1/4

Cheers, Bill
