Re: [Callers] Role Scramblers dances with balances
I don’t recall dancing this with Ted back in the 70’s, but I do remember a dance at the Concord Scout House where I was in a square right in front of the stage. After the walk through we all switched gender roles and danced the entire dance that way. Ted quickly found another square to watch. Bob

Note that the vast majority of MWSD dancers would have even more difficulty. I'm at the Queer Contra Dance Camp this weekend, and a *lot* of us are happily swapping gender roles in the middle of the dance (including a dance last night that including a Right & Left Grand -- yes, it was a 4x4). Contrariwise, relatively few square dancers these days can manage to dance to the music. -- Hugs and backrubs -- I break Rule 6http://rule6.info/ <*> <*> <*> Help a hearing-impaired person: http://rule6.info/hearing.html
Re: [Callers] Role Scramblers dances with balances
If my memory serves me well, yes, grand right and lefts and other things. I jotted it down at Mendocino, (BACDS dance week) or maybe Harvest Moon, in the 80s. Since it was at a dance camp, there was an expectation that we'd figure It out or have a good time messing up. And, that's part of what I recall. That it was OK to mess up and laugh a lot! ~erik hoffman -Original Message- From: James Saxe [mailto:jim.s...@gmail.com] Sent: Friday, April 8, 2016 11:26 AM To: callers@lists.sharedweight.net Cc: Erik Hoffman <e...@erikhoffman.com> Subject: Re: [Callers] Role Scramblers dances with balances On Apr 8, 2016, at 9:49 AM, Erik Hoffman wrote: > Don’t know if you call squares, but Ted Sanella [Sannella --js] > called this square—a number of times when I was lucky enough to dance to his > calling. > ... If the breaks included allemande left (with corners) and right and left grand, dancers would have to cope with looking in what could feel like the "wrong" direction to find corners and with going in what could feel like the "wrong" direction for the right and left grand. If the allemande left came after a partner swing, that might have been particularly challenging for dancers unused to that sort of thing. Note 2: Four potential 'shadows' (your shadow, your partner's shadow, and each of your shadow's partners) Note 3: Warning to ends: watch out - you come in at 2nd balance or R *for first time, allemande until gents are in center. A revised version of Tom Hinds "Any Kind of Settlement" which was from Tony Saletan's "Amicable Settlement." I wanted to mix the randomness of 'allemande as much as you want' with the 'walk to next ocean wave'. Also named after the fact that it was written right after I started 'settling in' to Tallahassee, having just moved there. I teach this dance having the women go in the middle first, then 2nd walk thru have the men go in the middle, but explain the people in the middle are playing the women's role (as far as the R thru, the Ladies Chain, the shadow swing). Conversely, the ones on the outside are playing the men's role. I'm looking for dances with elements for each dance role that are more typically danced by the other role (such as Jeff Spero's "Equal Opportunity," which has the ones chain). I have "Roll Away Sue" by Bob Isaacs (a gent's chain), but would love other dances with balances and waves that might fit this theme. Thanks for your ideas!
