to elaborate on this, you can (accidently) remove icons from the bar by
dragging them off while you hold down the command key (the one with the
apple on it)

Did it accidentally got removed ?
Right click/control click anywhere on the toolbar and choose customize…
OR
from the View menu > Customize Toolbar

In the sheet that comes up, drag the icon for the back arrow to the  
toolbar.
