Hi Gregj, I think what they are saying is that the list has been told several times that Care2X has been ported to PHP5, but the code has not been released. If it is not yet stable enough for general release, maybe a beta version could be put here on sourceforge for people to test and help speed the process up? Re: [Care2002-developers] how about the new release to php5?
Hi Tim, the code was on svn since the first announcement. i haven't made a release yet, because it was not fully tested and having it on svn permitted to programmers to download it such avoiding problems with stable systems. as i'm writing this email i'm merging the changes to the labs and other small improvements in the main tree. i hope to make a beta release this week with all the changes made to the code, and there are many :) gjergji Tim Schofield wrote: Hi Gregj, I think what they are saying is that the list has been told several times that Care2X has been ported to PHP5, but the code has not been released. Back in 2002, it seemed like a good idea to base the code development at the SourceForge. Six years latter, there are easier, simpler and much more reliable ways to store Open Source code. I do not know if you develop code using Ubuntu, but, at least, it seems that you also use it. Ubuntu's code development is based in what must be the best and most clever way to maintain code in 2008: The Launchpad https://launchpad.net/ Unlike SourceForge Launchpad is really free (and, among other things, your emails will not be filled up with publicity); is based on Bazaar, arguably one of the best CVS at this moment; it has mailing list support, bug track support and all the other amenities without the need to setup and maintain all the supporting software. All what is needed to maintain both the developers and the users happy is there ready to use. i don't know what do you mean with participate. From www.merriam-webster.com: participate - to take part, to have a part or share in something Could it be, to be able to: - check out the latest code developments, - easily report bugs, - easily contribute improvment suggestions? In an Open Source project, after the code is released, the most important success factor is user participation. It just does not matter if the users are developers or not. What matters are their experience reports, their description of the problems that they discover while using the software and, if we are, lucky, their ideas on how to improve. There is no programmer clever enough to have better and more creative ideas than a healthy community of users. And while not being your case, there is no clever code written by a dumb programmer. Gjergj Sheldija wrote: i agree with you, sf has a lot of problems practically with everything. i'm currently looking for something a bit more powerfull than launchpad. More powerful than launchpad? You could save yourself a lot of time and needless effort just by spending a few minutes at: https://launchpad.net/+tour/index and https://help.launchpad.net/FrontPage#user-guide Do you really miss anything else? and yes, i develop under ubuntu. Well, if you know the Ubuntu philosophy, you know Launchpad: it just works. And works pretty well indeed! as you may know, healthcare systems tend to have a development rule which is not the release quick, release often. On the contrary, DEVELOPMENT healthcare systems software MUST follow the release quick, release often and a million eyeballs do catch bugs better than a single pair rules. PRODUCTION Healthcare systems software (that affecting real patient lives) is the one which must have SLOW and SECURE setup/upgrade cycles. A note: Healthcare systems are critical systems,i.e., systems that may not fail (like aeroplanes, or nuclear facilities), because if they fail peole usually die. Healthcare supporting IT should be stable and bug free. But it is an unavoidable fact of life that every piece of software has bugs. The problem is that bugs in Health IT have the potential to kill people (if you loose data, or change it in an unintended way, those events may cause morbidity or mortality). we are working on stable systems with as a minimum of changes as possible. Stable PRODUCTION Healthcare IT systems should have as minimum changes as possible IF the code does not have critical bugs. If a critical bug is found the system should be immediately stopped and kept down until a patch to remove the critical bug can be installed. An example: if by misfortune you detect a bug that, in 1 in million patients, lets the code exchange the life saving heart medication of one patient with the oncologic chemotherapy that should be given to another... then the red button should be pressed and the system IMMEDIATELY halted until the the buggy routine can be substituted for a safer one. that's why i will start releasing the first beta this week and expect to become stable near the end of the year. That's why you should be practicing release quick, release often and letting the world help you catch the bad bugs. Anyway, just keep up the good work Gjergj. ... and show us the code, it does not need to be pretty or bug free.
