Man with a Brick is an image from near the end of the movie "The Fifth
Element". Does that generate licensing/copyright/etc. issues?

Design looks cool. I see the same issue with the space dancers others
have mentioned.

Well it looks cool. But the entire first page is nothing but a starry
sky with 2 sentences worth of information on it. In general, information
density in this design is really low, and most of it gives me a headache
if I try to read rather than just take in the prettiness.

Test that yourself: try to really read a few paragraphs of the prose on
that mockup. Then switch to the http://catalystframework.org/ and do the
same there. Which one hurts your eyes and which one soothes them?

Then what is this design trying to accomplish?

The goal that Tobias’ design was created to meet was to sell people on
Catalyst at a glance, by providing answers to the questions a) what is
Catalyst, b) why would anyone want it, and c) how to get started, all in
as little space and as few words as possible. Was there any similar goal
formulated for this new design? Was it met?

Furthermore – is this is supposed to be developed into a site-wide
design implemented beyond the front page? Or is this just swapping out
another look for the landing page shared with absolutely no other part
of the site that is even just one click away, like all the previous
“redesigns”? Changing the looks on the landing page is the easy part,
making something that works for the entire site and is implemented on
the entire site is what’s necessary and what has yet to happen, I think
ever since Catalyst has existed.

Design isn’t just putting a coat of paint on it…

Regards,

Concur with some recent feedback. It's done nattily but it's incohesive,
seems more targeted at HR and biz dev than software developers, and 2001
was approximately when Perl "died" and the movie makes me think of the
1960s, killer computers, and LSD, not MVC development for the future.

It's very pretty, I *love* the look of many of the graphics, and there
are some nice ideas in there.

However, it is a very wide design which is going to lead to horizontal
scrolling (the red section could do with having 2 rows of 3 things
instead of 1 of 5, the space between the text and the book graphic could
be reduced, the two guides to getting a decent Perl environment could do
with being shunted off to their own page with a choice of links instead
of a choice of columns) with some very tiny fonts (really tiny, the font
size could do with being a lot bigger).

I like the space theme, although as other people have commented it isn't
Catalyst's traditional theme. I'd carry the dotted graphic theme through
to the red section though (possibly with the telescope being done in
that style).

The Dancing astronauts are cute but more suggestive of Dancer than
Catalyst!

Then we come to Man With A Brick. Putting the first brick in place is a
good image for getting started … but completely breaks from the space
theme from elsewhere in the page. It's also the first section that uses
translucent backgrounds and it really feels like part of a different
site.

The list of clients is nice, very clear and good at highlighting some
high profile users of Catalyst. It suffers from too-many-columns but
that is easily fixed.

I like the layout a lot. But the Catalyst molecule logo was apparently mistaken
for a planetary system, which might have inspired the space theme. Perhaps keep
the layout but change the thematic elements back to the
chemistry/molecular/catalysis theme.

BTW, there are a lot of very cool colorful images of catalytic surfaces (for
example as seen on the cover of The Definitive Guide to Catalyst). Here's a
real cool image:

http://www6.slac.stanford.edu/pictures/990x660-news-article-expanded/130314-surfacechem-art-big.jpg

Which I found on this page:

http://www6.slac.stanford.edu/news/2013-03-14-surfacechemistry.aspx

That's likely copyrighted, but is perhaps a great starting place for
inspiration.

I like it overall.

I'd replace the dancing astronauts with something more "catalyst-y" like maybe
test tubes or beakers and a bunsen burner with a nice flame on top.

Re: [Catalyst] New design

Kind of odd. The spaceship is the lunar shuttle from "2001 a Space
Odysy" which is ambiguous since its now 2013, long past 2001, but still
futuristic since there are no bases on the Moon. Yet.

I don't get the dancers either, especially since Dancer is a
"competitor" for Catalyst. Sort of an ambivalent vibe. I'd sort of
expect something linked to the word "catalyst" instead, but I confess I
can't think of a visual that evokes catalysis (facilitating rate of
reaction by effectively lowering activation energy).

The design is clean and crisp though. Maybe a bit dark.

I am struggling to relate the icon to the feature.

Break dancing = plug-in ?

Of course YMMV!
