Tommy Lane http://mariagoretti.org/default.htmMaria Goretti was born in 1890 in Italy, the daughter of Luigi and Assunta Goretti. Nine years later in 1899, her father Luigi began to work for a Count farmer south of Rome and made a deal with Mr Serenelli that his family would share the same house with the Serenelli family, also laborers for the same farmer. Maria’s father Luigi died of malaria. In June 1902 Mr Serenelli’s son, Alessandro, began to cause trouble for Maria. He began to boss her around and to make advances towards her which she shrugged off. Her big mistake was the she did not tell her mother because she did not want to cause trouble. The following month, on July 5th 1902, he decided that he would be denied no longer. Alessandro, aged twenty, motioned her towards the bedroom but she refused shouting, “No! It is a sin! God does not want it!” He stabbed her fourteen times. While being taken to hospital in Nettuno on a horse-drawn ambulance she told everything. In the nearby hospital she underwent twenty hours of surgery without anesthesia. During that time she forgave Alessandro and prayed for him. On the following day, July 6th she died. She was not yet twelve years old. Alessandro was sentenced to thirty years hard labor. After six years in prison he was near despair and one night in 1910 Maria appeared to him in his cell. She smiled and was surrounded by lilies, symbols of purity. That was a turning point in Alessandro’s life and he regained his peace. His first deed after release from prison was to visit Maria’s mother and ask pardon. He accompanied her to Christmas Mass in the parish church where he spoke before the congregation, acknowledging his sin and asking forgiveness from God and the community. He took up work in a Capuchin monastery as the gardener. In 1947 Maria Goretti was beatified. Her mother and murderer were present. In June 1950 Pope Pius XII canonized Maria Goretti declaring her to be a saint and martyr. Her mother was present and a huge crowd of up to 500,000 people. It was the first time in history that a mother was present at the canonization of her child. In May 1970 Alessandro died. He had left the following letter, dated May 1961. I'm nearly 80 years old. I'm about to depart. Looking back at my past, I can see that in my early youth, I chose a bad path which led me to ruin myself. My behavior was influenced by print, mass-media and bad examples which are followed by the majority of young people without even thinking. And I did the same. I was not worried. There were a lot of generous and devoted people who surrounded me, but I paid no attention to them because a violent force blinded me and pushed me toward a wrong way of life. When I was 20 years old, I committed a crime of passion. Now, that memory represents something horrible for me. Maria Goretti, now a Saint, was my good Angel, sent to me through Providence to guide and save me. I still have impressed upon my heart her words of rebuke and of pardon. She prayed for me, she interceded for her murderer. Thirty years of prison followed. If I had been of age, I would have spent all my life in prison. I accepted to be condemned because it was my own fault. Little Maria was really my light, my protectress; with her help, I behaved well during the 27 years of prison and tried to live honestly when I was again accepted among the members of society. The Brothers of St. Francis, Capuchins from Marche, welcomed me with angelic charity into their monastery as a brother, not as a servant. I've been living with their community for 24 years, and now I am serenely waiting to witness the vision of God, to hug my loved ones again, and to be next to my Guardian Angel and her dear mother, Assunta. I hope this letter that I wrote can teach others the happy lesson of avoiding evil and of always following the right path, like little children. Relics of St Thérèse of Lisieux, a French Carmelite nun, are to be displayed in the jail's Victorian chapel as part of the relics' first tour of England and Wales. The tour, from 16 September to 16 October, also takes in York Minster as well as cathedrals in Liverpool, Salford, Leeds and Birmingham. An elaborate casket containing the bones of the Roman Catholic saint will be transported to the prison, home to 1,300 category B male prisoners, 300 of whom are Catholic. The venue had been chosen because of the saint's special affinity with sinners and those on the edge, said Canon John Udris, a member of the tour's planning committee. The relics will be placed in the Church of England chapel, a Grade II listed building, and more spacious than the Catholic chapel. For more than three hours, prisoners will be able to file past the reliquary, the container of the relics, and kiss it as they pray. St Thérèse, who died in 1897 from tuberculosis at the age of 24, is known as the Little Flower of Jesus. The Basilica of St Thérèse, in her home town of Lisieux, attracts two million visitors a year, making it the second most popular pilgrimage site in France after Lourdes. In her autobiography, she recounted that when she was a teenager, she prayed for the conversion of Henri Pranzini, a triple murderer who refused to confess, and asked God for a sign he had repented. The next day, she read in a newspaper that, just as the guillotine was about to drop, he snatched a crucifix from a priest and kissed the five wounds of Christ three times. I had been given my sign and it was typical of the graces Jesus had given me to make me eager to pray for sinners, she wrote. Some biographies have claimed Edith Piaf, the French singer, was cured of blindness as a seven-year-old after visiting the saint's grave. However, a visit of the relics to Iraq in 2002 in an attempt to avert war failed to have the desired effect.They have toured 40 countries – bringing New York's Fifth Avenue to a standstill in 1999 and attracting more people in Ireland in 2001 than turned out to see Pope John Paul II in 1979. As the patron saint of aviators, some of her relics are to be taken into space in 2011 by the US astronaut Ronald Garan. She is also patron saint of florists, illness, missions and Russia, although Russia does not recognise her status. One of her characteristics was to break down walls, said Canon Udris, the dean of Northampton Cathedral. Staff at Wormwood Scrubs will be anxious to avoid a too literal an interpretation of that trait. The rules allow the funding of research which uses stem cells harvested from fertility clinic embryos and also outline informed consent standards for women or couples who donate their embryos. The guidelines, which implement a March 9 executive order issued by President Barack Obama, become effective July 7. Msgr. David Malloy, General Secretary of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops (USCCB), has been critical of the NIH rules. In a May commentary on the guidelines, he said the rules were broader or more permissive than any previous research policy in key respects. He also insisted it was a human right not to be subjected to harmful experimentation. As the President noted, Msgr. Malloy said, we must not make 'a false choice between sound science and moral values.' In fact, these sources of guidance both point in the same direction, away from destructive embryonic stem cell research. His executive order and these Guidelines nonetheless insist on a course of action that is both morally objectionable and, increasingly, scientifically obsolete. This is not merely a political or ideological problem, or a problem of religious dogma, but a deeply human problem: We are testing the limits of our obligation to treat all fellow human beings, of every age and condition, with basic respect, Msgr. Malloy wrote. There was doubt about whether the new NIH requirements for informed consent would have disqualified some existing stem cell lines, the Associated Press says. The NIH now requires documentation of voluntary informed consent from a woman or couple who donate the original embryo. They must have been told of other options for leftover embryos, such as donating to another infertile woman. The NIH designed a compromise which deems old stem cell lines eligible for government research dollars if scientists can prove they met the spirit of the new ethics standards. An NIH registry will list all cell lines that qualify. Acting NIH Director Raynard Kington portrayed the informed consent guidelines as a reasonable compromise which will achieve President Obama's stated goal of advancing science while maintaining rigorous ethical standards, the Associated Press reports. Stem cell research hopes to harness the power of adult or embryonic stem cells to create better treatments for ailments ranging from diabetes to spinal cord injuries. The draft guidelines allowed the use of federal funds for embryonic stem-cell research only on embryos created for reproductive purposes at in vitro fertilization clinics and no longer needed for that purpose. They set standards for voluntary informed consent by those donating the embryos, and said no NIH funds would be given for research that did not meet the standards.
