Black-bellied Plover plus peeps at Myers 6:30 PM

2009-08-23 Thread Stuart Krasnoff
John Greely and I watched a Black-bellied Plover along with a
Semipalmated and a Least Sandpiper at Myers Pt. from ca. 1830-1910
h. As I was leaving the plover took flight and started circling when
some young kids went out on the point.

Dryden Lake

2009-08-23 Thread jpackard

I hiked Dryden Lake Sunday afternoon. Saw 2 CASPIAN TERNS
and a single CORMORANT on the lake. At the far end by the road
were a family of BLUEBIRDS on the phone lines- 6 or 7 of them,
many fledglings.

Driving home on Malloryville Road were a family of TURKEYS
crossing the road. Lots of BARN and TREE SWALLOWS on the phone
lines on Salt Road.

E.Kingbirds

2009-08-23 Thread B Mcaneny
+Yesterday about 3pm, I stopped along Cayuga View Rd east of T'Burg to watch a
large flock of starlings amid the cornstalks. Probably 500 or so birds, but
may have been more out of sight in the corn. One common grackle with them.
Brave.

Then I checked out 5 Barn Swallows on the power lines and was pleased to see an
Eastern Kingbird next to them. There were other birds widely separated
elsewhere along the power lines, and further study revealed that they were all
E. Kingbirds, a total of about 20. There were possibly more in the area since
I had 3 or 4 around my yard a few hundred yds away and they might have been
some of the same flock. A check of John Bull showed an inland fall max of 60,
near Cayuga Lake, no less, on 20 Aug 1994. I reported my 20 to e-bird.
Shirley drove by an hour later an saw none, so they appear to have moved on.

Sapsucker Woods, Sun 8/23/09

2009-08-23 Thread Mark Chao
I joined Linda and Jessica Orkin in leading a group of 10 birders around
Sapsucker Woods on Sunday morning (7:30-9:10 AM). We found the most bird
activity in the hawthorn trees by the boardwalk next to the feeder garden.
Here we saw two adult male BLACKBURNIAN WARBLERS, a first-fall MAGNOLIA
WARBLER, a YELLOW WARBLER, an AMERICAN REDSTART, and a RED-EYED VIREO, among
a few PURPLE FINCHES, House Finches, goldfinches, and others. See below for
the full list from eBird.
