[cayugabirds-l] Northern Shrike- Ellis Hollow Cr. Rd

2010-12-02 Thread Laura Stenzler
Hi all
There was a Northern Shrike on Ellis Hollow Creek Rd., on the telephone wire
just east of the intersection with Turkey Hill Rd. at 12:33 this afternoon
(Thursday). I believe somebody reported a possible shrike at that location last
week. It was quite visible and active!

[cayugabirds-l] Myers -- eiderless once again

2010-12-02 Thread Gordon Bonnet
I was at Myers from a little before 4 till sundown, and there were
large flocks of Mallards & Coots (plus one Red-breasted Merganser and
three Great Blue Herons) -- no Eider that I could see. I scanned the
large Mallard flocks one bird at a time, and nada. There was one
raft of ducks further out that I couldn't resolve with binoculars, so
perhaps the Eider was further out, but a walk from the parking area
to the lighthouse, then across to the marina and south along the
shore, turned up no Eider.

[cayugabirds-l] more predations

2010-12-02 Thread Dave Nutter
I walked to and from Stewart Park today (02 Dec).  On may return, crossing Taughannock Blvd I noticed all the ROCK PIGEONS who rest on the wires, along with a few EUROPEAN STARLINGS take flight.  Then I saw there was one bird perched on the power pole midway among where the other birds like to rest: an adult COOPER'S HAWK.  It was unsuccessful.  When I got home I went into the garden to harvest some frozen greens and I scared up a substantial bird:  a juvenile SHARP-SHINNED HAWK with the remains of what was so red I think it was a Northern Cardinal.   On the subject of predation, on Tuesday about 7:50am I was at Stewart Park taking a break from taxi driving by looking at a/the male MERLIN perched atop a snag across the mouth of Fall Creek from the Cascadilla Boathouse.  Suddenly it took flight toward the swan pond and was quickly lost to my view, but moments later it was flying back to the same perch with a small bird in tow.  It held the bird at an angle and so hidden behind its perch that I could not identify the intact victim.  Moments later an AMERICAN CROW took interest and displaced the Merlin from the perch.  The Merlin flew south with its prey and the Crow moseyed off elsewhere among shoreline trees.  Later I returned to the area and saw that the Merlin had returned to the same perch and had consumed much of its meal.  Other birds of interest today include:AMERICAN BLACK DUCK - 3 on lakeCOMMON MERGANSER - several on Fall Creek, Cascadilla Creek, and InletHOODED MERGANSER - 1 male, 5 females on Inlet from Farmer's MarketAMERICAN COOT - at least 5 together near Stewart Park dock; other singles along shoreBALD EAGLE - 1 adult on snag across from Cascadilla BoathouseRED-TAILED HAWK - 1, stayed in tree beside swan pond as I walked pastDOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT - 1 immature on piling clusterNORTHERN FLICKER - 1 in Stewart Park BROWN CREEPER - 1 in Stewart Park BELTED KINGFISHER - 1 by pool between golf course and fishing area (clearer water than Fall Creek today!)DARK-EYED JUNCO - several in several weedy/brushy areas I passedAMERICAN TREE SPARROW - a few in with JuncosThe lake lacked interesting ducks, and I don't think it's just because I lacked a scope.--Dave Nutter
