[cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Lapland Longspur - photos

2010-12-25 Thread Marie P Read
HI all,

The Mt Pleasant Lapland Longspur was feeding on corncobs in the same place as
yesterday with a single Horned Lark and two Snow Buntings. Close to the road at
times and easily visible. I was there between 10:00 and 11:30 am. Some photos
are posted here:

A very nice Christmas bird!

[cayugabirds-l] siskins!

2010-12-25 Thread Asher Hockett
I took some time out to watch my feeders this afternoon, looking for
Redpolls, and a trio of Pine Siskins parked themselves at the Nyger seed
instead. First in several years. They just sit and feast.

I am sure the Redpolls are not far off.

[cayugabirds-l] more swans, King Eider, Northern Harriers, Rough-legged Hawk

2010-12-25 Thread Dave Nutter
A late morning walk to the lake was very productive: The KING EIDER is still in the mouth of Cayuga Inlet, diving close on the west side of the white lighthouse jetty.A flock of 16 TUNDRA SWANS flew over Cass Park, first northbound, then over Treman Marine Park southbound, later to the northwest toward Stewart Park, where there was finally a total of 19 (including the previous family of 3) swimming with the many CANADA GEESE. In addition to the waterfowl which have been mentioned recently, I saw a NORTHERN HARRIER female coursing low over the field north of Treman marina thence away over the lake. On my way home I saw a second Northern Harrier, this one an immature northbound over Cayuga Inlet. Over West Hill I saw a dark ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK being escorted away by an AMERICAN CROW. Both these raptors are new for my Luddite List. I found a SONG SPARROW in a sprawling evergreen shrub south of the Hangar Theatre entrance road. I was not able to pick out the adult and juvenile Glaucous Gull nor the adult Lesser Black-backed Gull which I scoped from Stewart Park yesterday. --Dave Nutter

RE: [cayugabirds-l] Rafferty Rd - Snow Bunting roosts

2010-12-25 Thread Marie P Read
Here's what Birds of North America Online says for roosting behavior in Snow
Bunting:
***
Sleeping, Roosting, Sunbathing
In winter, roosts in slight scrapes in snow in open areas; average distance
between roosting birds 2.5 m, rarely 30 cm (Vincent and Bédard 1976). Only
roosts behind snowdrifts in lee of wind when temperatures below -7°C; huddling
together not observed, even under extreme conditions (Vincent and Bédard 1976).
During storms, passively covered with snow; during extreme conditions (-35°C),
burrows into snow (Bagg 1943). Rarely observed roosting in trees (Parmelee
1968). In early spring on breeding grounds, roosts in loose aggregations in
cracks and holes on cliffs (Parmelee 1968); 50–80 birds roosted in narrow
cracks of southwest-facing, exposed cliffs at 2 Greenland roosts in early
spring (Meltofte 1983); after territories established, male roosts alone in
crack or hole on own territory .

BNA has nothing specific about winter Horned Lark roosts, but I would presume
they are also on the ground.

Re. Lapland Longspur winter roosting:

Sleeping, Roosting, Sunbathing
Even during continuous daylight during breeding season, males roost singly on
song perch rocks for 3–5 h in the middle of the “night” (20:30–01:30 MST at
Sarcpa Lake; RM); females roost at nest (Hussell 1972); during cold weather,
several pairs roosted communally in grass tussocks (Watson 1957). Roosting
sites during migration and winter unknown.

Subject: [cayugabirds-l] Rafferty Rd

Stopped by Rafferty Rd late this afternoon. 2 N HARRIERS active, didn't find
any owls. At 4:15 huge, spread-out flocks of HORNED LARKS and SNOW BUNTINGS
came from somewhere south, flew over and appeared to be headed for the wooded
area north of the Rafferty Rd fields. I counted 360, but there were already
some passed by and uncountable in the distance when I got there. What sort of
a place do these species tend to like for the night's roost- anybody know?

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Mt Pleasant Lapland Longspur - photos

2010-12-25 Thread bob mcguire
If you go up to view the Longspur, you might also want to look for the
CLOUD of some 300 Snow Buntings on Mt Pleasant. For the last two days
(and likely longer) they have been feeding in the field to the west
and downslope from the observatory. From time to time they erupt in a
swirling, twittering mass, circle this way and that, and then settle
back to feeding. It's a beautiful scene!
