[cayugabirds-l] Wilson's Snipe
Sunday afternoon we returned to MWR to get more views of the Marbled Godwit, even though we had plenty of photos from Saturday. We did not find the Marbled Godwit, but did see 3 Wilson's Snipe along the mudflats near the edge of the drive at the new shorebird area. [cayugabirds-l] Swan Pen/Jetty Woods
On a walk around the Swan Pen and then through Jetty Woods this morning I came up with a few good birds. Both Yellow Warblers and Yellow-rumped Warblers were singing on the trail around the Pen, giving me a good chance to listen to the differences between their songs - which at times sounded quite similar. 4 Yellow Warblers, 4 Yellow-rumps, and 2 (eastern) Palm Warblers. Over in Jetty Woods there was a pair of Rusty Blackbirds, just in from the pumphouse. The male was displaying to the female. Ringing out over all was a Carolina Wren. And moving from log to log in the wet channel just across from the Rustys was a Green Heron. [cayugabirds-l] FYI, crow with a white wing band (?) N of Spencer
I have seen a lot of crows around but this was the first I saw one with what might be a tag outside of Ithaca. I was heading into Spencer this morning just north of the turn onto Fisher Settlement Rd, ~08:30. There was a crow flying off the road to the left, Northeast, with what appeared to be a white rectangle on its left wing. There might also have been a white rectangular mark on the left side of the body. Nigel
[cayugabirds-l] Lunch walk: visual Northern Waterthrush
Highlight (and last bird seen before coming back in from a quick lunch walk): NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH (close long observation, 30' from gate to back door of Lab, foraging at pond edge) yellowish-white breast, heavy streaking on breast and sides; distinct white eyebrow, characteristic slight but constant tail-bobbing, silent, foraging, 10-20' from me and tolerant as I stood still or moved forward slowly; legs did not seem as long as the first one I saw some years ago which at the time I thought was a small mutant Robin with freakishly long legs! YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERs (numerous, foraging and landing on sticks in back pond, landed on shrubs and sang at end of platform about 8' from me) RED-WINGED BLACKBIRDs COMMON GRACKLE YELLOW-BELLIED SAPSUCKERs (2 fighting aerial grapple, others flying to perches along the path) MALLARD pair CANADA GOOSEs PIED-BILLED GREBEs (2 on pond near each other) COMMON MERGANSER M flyover AMERICAN ROBINs EUROPEAN STARLINGs NORTHERN ROUGH-WINGED SWALLOWs (several over pond from platform) TREE SWALLOWs (hunting with RWSW) BELTED KINGFISHER F (landed quite close to me, so great observation, crest erected, rattling) WHITE-THROATED SPARROWs (numerous) AMERICAN TREE SPARROW (one foraging in ground weeds) NORTHERN CARDINAL GREAT BLUE HERON (on big snag) BLACK-CAPPED CHICKADEE HOUSE FINCH RED-BELLIED WOODPECKER NORTHERN FLICKER TUFTED TITMOUSE AMERICAN GOLDFINCH BROWN-HEADED COWBIRD AMERICAN CROW No Kinglets today at platform, many yesterday. Another birder (coming from South Wilson) reported a single Hermit Thrush and Veery, Yellow Warbler and more Yellow-rumped but I didn't have time to take the 'long' road back. RE: [cayugabirds-l] Red-bellied threesome
Day before yesterday, my nieces and I watched a nest occupied by a male at Sapsucker Woods. We had very interesting behavioral observations. Male would call and then go inside the nest and drum, sound was rather lower than their usual drumming but audible. I was wondering what that inform. May tells the female how deep he has dug?? We tried to record and recorder was under my nieces' control and I hope she recorded it. When a female came to visit there was so much of excitement among two, finally she left and he was back in his hole or just outside the hole calling incessantly. We have had four RBWO being very noise at out house for over a month. This activity peaked Sunday, at the same time that Geo observed the same behavior at his house. On Sunday, we had two females, one chasing the other, for over an hour. Very noisy. The male hung around part of the time and then left, perhaps hoping that both females would become reconciled to each other and one would excavate a new hole nearby. Our pair has excavated a hole that can be watched from our kitchen sink and window, much more fun than washing dishes (both male and female shared in excavating). On Sunday, after about an hour of nearly constant pursuit, one of the female RBWO went into the nest cavity. For the next several minutes, the two femals had a billing duel. One inside the hole kept poking at the one outside and visa versa. Really interesting wing flashing, bobbing, calling and beak thrusting. The two females have not been at it since that I have seen. John Confer On 4/24/2011 9:24 AM, Geo Kloppel wrote: Around my yard this morning: lots of gobbling tom Turkeys, Ruffed Grouse thumping from various directions, several Hermit Thrushes, numerous Ruby-crowned Kinglets, one Blue-headed Vireo, one Black and White Warbler, one Louisiana Waterthrush, several Field Sparrows, at least six Fox Sparrows (peaking here now!), numerous Eastern Towhees, a few Purple Finches... Several days ago all my feeder birds vanished for a few minutes while an immature Cooper's Hawk ambushed the deserted feeders. For five minutes I watched a pair (!) of Cowbirds attend very purposefully to the movements of the Phoebes nesting under my eaves. I thought this kind of scouting was just the responsibility of the female Cowbird, but apparently not. Maybe female scouting just looks irresistibly attractive to the male? A Red-bellied Woodpecker threesome made quite a commotion in the big maple tree over my porch. -Geo Geo Kloppel Bowmaker Restorer 227 Tupper Road Spencer NY 14883 607 564 7026 g...@cornell.edu geoklop...@gmail.com -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ -- -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html 3) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
