[cayugabirds-l] Rusty Blackbird: an interesting article and a photo
Here's an interesting article about the Rusty Blackbird that appears in Northern Woodlands magazine (a very nice publication with all kinds of natural history tidbits, although with a definite focus on forestry, for those who aren't familiar with it) http://northernwoodlands.org/outside_story/article/an-unnoticed-little-known-and-disappearing-songbird/ It made me realize how lucky we in the Cayuga Lake Basin are to have several spots, most notably Sapsucker Woods with its wet, swampy pools, where we can consistently see these cool northern birds as they pass through in spring. A couple of weeks ago I was able to photograph one there, thanks to Mark Chao who was essential in getting me onto this bird: http://www.marieread.com/cpg/displayimage.php?album=483pos=0 (Taken using a 500mm lens + 1.4X, and a flash with a Better Beamer flash extender. [cayugabirds-l] Migrants around Ithaca
Lots of warblers seen today. I toured around to lots of spots around the Ithaca area throughout the morning. I started at the Dodge Rd spruces, where there was BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, YELLOW WARBLER, WILSON'S WARBLER, and in the fields SAVANNAH SPARROW and an EASTERN KINGBIRD. At the Lab of O, I came across perhaps the greatest flock of warblers I have ever witnessed along the Wilson trail. Within a 15 minute span, I picked up YELLOW WARBLER, YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLER, another WILSON'S WARBLER, AMERICAN REDSTART, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, MOURNING WARBLER (skulking along the edge of the water for a good 4 minutes before I lost it in the thick stuff), NASHVILLE WARBLER, CAPE MAY WARBLER, NORTHERN PARULA, BLUE-WINGED WARBLER, and PRAIRIE WARBLER. Most of these represented single birds. Also around the lab, there was singing SCARLET TANAGER, RED-EYED VIREO, BLACK-THROATED BLUE WARBLER, OVENBIRD, and NORTHERN WATERTHRUSHES.! ! Next, I stopped by Comstock Knoll to find a singing PINE WARBLER and a RUBY-CROWNED KINGLET.A quick trip by the swan pen at Stewart Park found 8 YELLOW WARBLERS, 2 YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, and a single PALM WARBLER. The ibis were still present when I was there around 1230. Very few waterfowl left, just 1 BUFFLEHEAD, 2 REDHEADS, and 5 LESSER SCAUP of note. Also singing WARBLING VIREO and CAROLINA WREN in the woods, and about 50 BONAPARTE'S GULLS sitting on the grass on the flooded golf course. A quick stop around lower buttermilk found another NASHVILLE WARBLER, many singing SWAMP SPARROWS, WINTER WREN, COMMON YELLOWTHROATS, and a surprise BREWSTER'S WARBLER that came into pishing. It showed nicely out of the shrub swamp that's located on the backside of the grass fields opposite the lower buttermilk falls parking lot. One stop at Lick Brook couldnt turn up a Waterthrush, but searching did afford nice views of both BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER and MAGNOLIA WARBLER. Also a! ! nother BLUE-WINGED WARBLER about 200 yards up the Finger Lakes Trail from its intersection with Townline Road. -Stefan Karkuff -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
Re: [cayugabirds-l] White-faced Ibis, Stewart Park
I checked around 3 PM with no luck either -- did anyone see them depart or relocate? No Moorhen for me, but 48 BONAPARTE'S GULLS on the flooded golf course were nice, plus singing WHITE-CROWNED SPARROW and lingering PALM WARBLER. The remnant raft of ducks off Stewart had 2 male REDHEAD, 6 LESSER SCAUP, and 3 female BUFFLEHEAD. A breeding-plumaged HORNED GREBE was also fairly close. [cayugabirds-l] Lindsay-Parsons Biod. Preserve
Hi all, Ton and I started birding early this morning on our property, east of Ithaca. New birds for the year were RED-EYED VIREO, COMMON YELLOWTHROAT, BALTIMORE ORIOLE and REDSTART. There were also many YELLOW-RUMPED WARBLERS, as there were just now (8 pm), hawking from trees. Among these evening feeders was one more FOY bird - a PALM WARBLER. After birding our property, we stopped briefly at Dodge Rd., but decided to move on to our planned destination for the day - the Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve in Danby. We arrived around 9 am, a bit later than originally planned. We had a nice list of species, but it was surprising how few of most species we actually saw or heard. We saw only one INDIGO BUNTING, which was not singing. We heard only one BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER in the woods, etc. We did see or hear 13 warbler species, however! I think there is still alot of migration that will be happening during the coming days. The trees are just starting to flower and many are still pretty bare, but the honeysuckle is in full leaf, which is fine for the field birds. We heard and/or saw the following: Location: Lindsay-Parsons Biodiversity Preserve Observation date: 5/7/11 Number of species: 55 Canada Goose 2 Wood Duck 2 Ruffed Grouse 2 Red-tailed Hawk 1 Mourning Dove X Belted Kingfisher 2 Red-bellied Woodpecker 1 Yellow-bellied Sapsucker X Downy Woodpecker 1 Northern Flicker X Eastern Kingbird 1 Yellow-throated Vireo 1 Warbling Vireo 2 Red-eyed Vireo 1 Blue Jay X American Crow X Tree Swallow X Barn Swallow 2 Black-capped Chickadee X Tufted Titmouse X White-breasted Nuthatch X House Wren 2 Wood Thrush 1 American Robin X Gray Catbird X Brown Thrasher 1 European Starling X Blue-winged Warbler 2 Yellow Warbler X Chestnut-sided Warbler 1 Black-throated Blue Warbler 1 Yellow-rumped Warbler X Black-throated Green Warbler 1 Prairie Warbler 8 Palm Warbler 1 Black-and-white Warbler 1 American Redstart 1 Ovenbird 10 Common Yellowthroat X Hooded Warbler 1 Eastern Towhee 2 Chipping Sparrow X Field Sparrow X Song Sparrow X White-throated Sparrow 1 Scarlet Tanager 1 Northern Cardinal 2 Rose-breasted Grosbeak 3 Indigo Bunting 1 Red-winged Blackbird X Common Grackle 2 Brown-headed Cowbird 2 Baltimore Oriole 3 Purple Finch 1 American Goldfinch X Laura Stenzler l...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --
