[cayugabirds-l] FW: [GeneseeBirds-L] Red-necked Grebes at Montezuma NWR
-Original Message- From: geneseebirds-l-boun...@geneseo.edu on behalf of katkir...@frontier.com Sent: Tue 10/4/2011 11:26 PM To: geneseebird...@geneseo.edu Subject: [GeneseeBirds-L] Red-necked Grebes at Montezuma NWR This afternoon around 3 PM I was at the end of Van Dyne Spoor Rd at the Sandhill Crane Unit wetland and observed two different grebe species in the open water area of the marsh there-the smaller grebe was a pied-billed grebe, which I am more familiar with, but there were 3 individuals of a much larger-sized grebe - red chestnut neck, white throat, dark gray and brown body with dull white underneath. After checking my bird guides at home, I believe they were Red-necked Grebes. I hope others can confirm this species here or in the vicinity. [cayugabirds-l] Hog Hole - NO Nelson's
A late morning walk through Hog Hole and the field just east of it produced no Nelson's Sparrow today. In fact, it was quite unbirdy compared to a couple of days ago. There was a late season Osprey circling over the creek, 4 Song Sparrows and 20 American Goldfinches in and around the fields. I did notice the stakes that Dave Nutter has placed in the field as potential perches. Now we need a few more birds! [cayugabirds-l] Sapsucker Woods, Wed 10/5 (Gray-cheeked Thrush still present)
The GRAY-CHEEKED THRUSH is still present in Sapsucker Woods on Wednesday. The location is the same (southern Wilson Trail between the entrance to the woods and the north end of the Podell Boardwalk, especially up against the south side of the hedgerow that faces the building). The bird continues to offer extremely good views close to the trail, though initially finding it may be challenging because it tends to stay still for long stretches, digesting berries. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Another Dickcissel!! - 5 October 2011 - Etna, NY
When I finally got outside last night around 11 PM, birds were coming over, but they were high and faint. In 40 minutes, I counted about 45 thrush calls -- only 3-4 WOOD THRUSH and the rest SWAINSON's; no Gray-cheeked -- and about 60 zeeet notes. I believe I identified several each of Common Yellowthroat, Black-throated Blue Warbler, Savannah Sparrow, and White-throated Sparrow -- most were Blackpoll-type buzzy zeet notes. One of my last birds, though, was a clear AMERICAN BITTERN, which gave 3 distinctive wark notes about 15 seconds apart as it headed due south. As I was listening real-time, I heard another distinct frappy, flatulant-sounding DICKCISSEL call. This one had a total of 5 distinct notes within the call, with a sixth fainter note at the tail of the call. Very neat! This bird called at about 6:29:30. And, to my surprise, another frappy DICKCISSEL called at 21:58 (9:58pm). A handful of White-throated Sparrows, a Solitary Sandpiper, Swainson's Thrushes and Gray-cheeked Thrushes, several warblers (Black-throated Blues plus other zeeps), Savannah Sparrows, and more to come. More Green Herons, a Great Blue, and a White-throated Sparrow are going over as I type this. Good birding! Sincerely, Chris T-H -- Christopher T.
