[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma CBC

2011-11-02 Thread Jane Graves
The Montezuma CBC this year is taking place on Monday, December 19. We hope to
attract more participants by not conflicting either with the Syracuse count on
Saturday or the Rochester count on Sunday.

Please contact me either by phone (607-342-6096) or by email
(jgra...@skidmore.edu) if you are interested in participating.

Good birding.

[cayugabirds-l] Stewart Park 2Nov11

2011-11-02 Thread Jay McGowan
I checked Stewart Park fairly briefly at lunch time today. Waterbirds
seemed about the same as they have been, but I did see two late NASHVILLE
WARBLERS, a BROWN CREEPER, and a NORTHERN MOCKINGBIRD around the swan pen.

[cayugabirds-l] Newbie sighting

2011-11-02 Thread K. Alice Wood Bulkeley
Hi everyone,

My name is Allie, and I joined this group thanks to a friend. I've always loved
birds but admittedly don't know much about them! I've been enjoying reading
your sightings. I wanted to chime in this morning with one of my own. Though a
newbie, it's hard to mistake a pileated woodpecker, which I saw about an hour
ago on the East Ithaca Rec Way (between Honness Lane and Mitchell Street). I
also heard what I believe was either a red- or white-breasted nuthatch. Also
hard to mistake that nasally honking!

I look forward to reading more sightings, and to learning more about birds!

Allie

[cayugabirds-l] Ringwood raven

2011-11-02 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

Recovering from knee surgery a week ago Monday, I was able to totter at glacial
speed down to Ringwood Reserve and back just now. The highlight was a Common
Raven flyover, making the weirdest cronking I have ever heard. These birds
never fail to amaze me with their vocal variety.

[cayugabirds-l] Birds eating ash seeds

2011-11-02 Thread Marie P Read
Hi all,

I was just watching 3 House Finches feeding on the numerous ash seeds hanging
from the trees in my yard. Shortly after, 2 goldfinches joined in the feast but
seemed not to have such as easy job of eating the seeds.

There is such a glut of ash seeds this year I wonder what bird species other
people have been seeing feeding on them? Maybe they will bring in Evening
Grosbeaks!
