[cayugabirds-l] Myers Point, Sapsucker Woods 21Nov2011
From my morning lakewatch at Myers Point I saw a few birds moving with the nice light north winds today from 7:00-8:30. Highlights included a southbound flock of about 130 SNOW GEESE 35 TUNDRA SWANS moving south down the lake fairly high, calling as they went; a surprising number of small flocks (groups of 15-30) of AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS, a few BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, and RED-BREASTED MERGANSERS around on the lake; dozens of migrating COMMON LOONS, most quite high; five GREEN-WINGED TEAL on the lake; a total of 47 HOODED MERGANSERS, some in a large group north of the point and some flying south; six DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANTS soaring high; and a SNOW BUNTING who shared the lighthouse point with me all morning. I didn't find much of note on Salt Point (aside from 15+ American Tree Sparrows), but I saw at least one SWAMP SPARROW and lots of Song Sparrows there on Friday. Just now I did a lunch-time skywatch from the hill at Sapsucker Woods. Earlier in the morning I had a flock of about 15 AMERICAN BLACK DUCKS moving south, and this afternoon I had a flock of almost 100 SNOW GEESE very distant to the east, immediately followed by a nice GOLDEN EAGLE which wheeled a bit over the airport and then headed SSW pretty steadily until I lost it behind trees to the SE. I didn't get much white from the underwings and only a sort of pale shoulder bar from above, so I believe it was an adult or a second-year bird. A few vultures, Red-tailed Hawks, and Canada Geese were also moving, but not much else. Yesterday Nick Sly, Scott Haber, and I checked Hoag Road and vicinity at Summerhill for crossbills. We did have the continuing flock of 70+ PINE SISKINS, but no crossbills were among them. We did find nice buffy juvenile NORTHERN SHRIKE at the Christmas tree farm on Lick Street just north of Rt. 90. Here is a link to a photo of that, as well as some shots of the Stewart Park Cackling Geese from yesterday later in the album: https://picasaweb.google.com/37855303614931880/Winter20112012#5677226632444183634 Good birding, -Jay -- Jay McGowan Macaulay Library Cornell Lab of Ornithology jw...@cornell.edu -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsWELCOME http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsRULES http://www.NortheastBirding.com/CayugabirdsSubscribeConfigurationLeave.htm ARCHIVES: 1) http://www.mail-archive.com/cayugabirds-l@cornell.edu/maillist.html 2) http://www.surfbirds.com/birdingmail/Group/Cayugabirds 3) http://birdingonthe.net/mailinglists/CAYU.html Please submit your observations to eBird: http://ebird.org/content/ebird/ --

Hi all, Just as I was wondering when they might show up..there were 3 Snow Buntings in a flock of 20 or so Horned Larks (I think...from their calls...didn't sound like pipits) at the easternmost end of Mt Pleasant Rd around 4pm today.
