Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's gull on red lighthouse jetty

2011-12-10 Thread Dave Nutter
On Dec 10,2011, at 3:55 pm I was able to pick out a/the juvenile THAYER'S GULL on the red lighthouse breakwater.  I had been watching from the lakeshore of Treman Marine Park for about an hour, and the sun had already dropped behind West Hill when some of the birds shuffled around and a small-for-Herring, evenly pale-for-juvenile, dark-billed, finely detailed, brown-primaried gull came into view. When it raised its wings, the underside of the primaries was very pale. The bird could have been there awhile, hidden, or it could have been among the steady trickle of arrivals which I could not check while scoping birds on the breakwater or on the water.  Other finds included at least 1 DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT various places on the lake, the continuing 2 juvenile BRANT in the marina, a flock of about 22 NORTHERN PINTAIL out on the lake which flew I think south, a very high flock of about 50 SNOW GEESE flying southeast, and 2 TURKEY VULTURES over Cayuga Heights.  Everything else was as has been seen lately off Stewart Park. I saw no grebes or loons, but did not particularly try to fight the chop, shimmer, and wind vibration to concentrate on open water.  --Dave NutterOn Dec 10, 2011, at 07:47 AM, Brad Walker wrote:Still present as of 745 after a brief peregrine falcon scare.

[cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl Rochester

2011-12-10 Thread Donna Scott
Attached is a photo of the SNOWY OWL that has been seen at Charlotte Beach in
Rochester. (Charlotte is pronounced "sha LOT" in Rochester!)
My sister, Lynn Scott, who took the photo, walked out on the main pier to see
the Snowy Owl on the adjacent pier by the Coast Guard station.

[cayugabirds-l] Short-eared Owl Trip

2011-12-10 Thread Ann Mitchell
On a very cold, blustery day seventeen brave people, six being members of
the Cornell Student Bird Club, joined me in search of Short-eared Owls.
Because we started at 3:00 P.M. we had at least two hours before sunset.
We carpooled to Myers Point. It was extremely windy with high waves to see
much in the water. Many of us scoped the area and saw only three species of
gulls and Mallards. We next went to Ladoga to get out of the wind and hoped
to more species of waterfowl. Stepping out of his car, Paul Anderson
commented as to how "balmy" it felt. We scanned for awhile. The outcome
was a flotilla of Coots, Mallards, two Black Ducks and two Common Loons.

We then drove to the end of Scofield Road in Lansing where Gary Kohlenberg
and I saw an owl two days previously. Nothing was being seen because it
was really early, so thirteen of us walked to the end of the road to keep
warm. It was a extremely quiet for birds. As the sun became lower in the
sky, we did see three flocks of Canada Geese flying south. Eventually, it
became dark enough to see some planets - Venus and Jupiter. Someone put a
scope on Jupiter, and we all saw four moons. Then, our moon rose. It was
hugh and orange. We gawked at it. We waited until dark to see a Short-eared
Owl, but to no avail. It was disappointing, but everyone still had a great
time. Many said they would go next year. I want to say thanks to everyone
who joined me on the trip. It was great!

One last thing - Bob McGuire composed this haiku before the trip was over:
High hopes, Seven scopes, No owls.

Good Birding,
Ann Mitchell

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Thayer's Gull

2011-12-10 Thread Kenneth Victor Rosenberg
Yes, what could be a better way to spend a sunny December Saturday than sorting
through immature gulls on piles of steaming garbage. The THAYER'S was
surprisingly easy to pick out and keep track of, thanks to the excellent photos
posted by Chris Wood on eBird that formed our search image. After other folks
left, I picked out an interesting second-cycle KUMLEIN'S ICELAND GULL very
close to the Thayer's.

Scoping the choppy lake in icy north wind for a wayward grebe was not nearly as
fun. Plenty of coots and Bufflehead to hang out, but I guess they didn't rate.
As the Christmas Bird Counr approaches, lingering species such as 2
DOUBLE-CRESTED CORMORANT, 2 RUDDY DUCKS, and a female Am WIGEON become more
interesting.
