[cayugabirds-l] FW: Upcoming Raptor Survey Dates (No Snowy, but 2 Short-ears)

2011-12-21 Thread Jane Graves
Snowy Owl was not seen on last night's raptor survey, but there were two
Short-eared Owls, one at Wilgoose Grassland behind the Winery and the other at
the back of Tscahche in an area not open to the public. Volunteers for the
survey are welcome!

Re: [cayugabirds-l] FW: Upcoming Raptor Survey Dates (No Snowy, but 2 Short-ears)

2011-12-21 Thread bob mcguire
So, no Short-eards at Van Dyne Spoor Rd? And the Snowy Owl seems to
have left after a brief visit. Could it be that the prey base (voles/
mice) has collapsed this year?

[cayugabirds-l] Iceland Gulls at Stevenson Rd

2011-12-21 Thread Kevin J. McGowan
I had two ICELAND GULLS at the Cornell compost facility this morning. One was
a first-cycle youngster with an all-black bill (just a bit of pale at the base
of the lower mandible), pale and patterned tertials and tail feathers, and a
fair amount of dusky in the wingtips. The other was a 2-year old with a mostly
pale bill with a black ring near the tip, some silver in the mantle, and fairly
dusky wingtips. It was a more robust bird than the petite 1st-cycle, nearly as
big as the Herring Gulls.

I have put a few photos at the end of
http://picasaweb.google.com/KevinJ.McGowan/Birds2011.
