[cayugabirds-l] Montezuma and Snowy
I went out fairly late today, so didn't see a lot. I saw snow geese near my house on Chestnut Ridge Rd. in Sennett. Went by the Mud Lock eagle's nest but no one was home. Drove through Montezuma, but nothing much different- C geese and swans.. At Benning, there was a Great Blue Heron. Went to the Mucklands on rt. 31 and saw both Canada and Snow geese. On rt. 89 near the Winery there was a beautiful, male harrier. Headed to the Outlets next. Only spotted one Red-tail hawk and a kestrel on rt. 318. At the outlet mall, Snowy was perched on a ball on the red tower by the food court. It was attracting a lot of attention with the shoppers. It flew down to the dry creek bed in that area, but didn't catch anything. Next it flew to a light pole in the incut by Samsonite. It didn't stay long. Then it went to pole 6 by Old Navy (still attracting attention). By then it was 3:30 and getting quite dark so I packed up to leave. It flew again before I left. I spotted it back on the first red tower when I was leaving. In the hour or so that I watched it, it did not catch anything.I got a full body shot of it today which I put on my website. http://www.pbase.com/carol_keeler_photo/image/140652465 if you are interested. Re: [cayugabirds-l] Snowy Owl
Thank-you. Suddenly now I'm able to see on the eBird map 8 reports of the Outlet Mall bird between 12/26 and 12/30 (including a couple which are rather sloppily located), plus Joe Slattery's 12/26 report from King's Corner's Rd above the Cobblestone Winery in Varick. I guess reports of rarer birds take a bit longer to get through the eBird vetting system. I'm glad lots of people are keeping an eye on it and reporting it. If anyone can recall a specific earlier date they observed the bird, that would be useful info for eBird as well.--Dave NutterOn Dec 31, 2011, at 05:45 PM, Donna Scott d...@cornell.edu wrote: I put the Waterloo Outlet Mall Snowy Owl in E-Bird just now. [cayugabirds-l] 2012 Cayuga Lake Basin reports outside Ithaca area, e.g. Snowy Owl
There is a long tradition of recording when, where, and by whom each bird species is first observed each year within the Cayuga Lake Basin. I have kept this list for several years, but in 2012 it may be on the Cayuga Bird Club website, thanks to Paul Anderson. All the species found on the January 1 Ithaca Christmas Bird Count get listed first, but for birds first found in other parts of the Cayuga Lake Basin there is an opportunity for (limited) fame and glory. Starting January 1, please be sure to post your observations of birds you suspect we may not find on the Ithaca CBC, such as swans, a certain Snowy Owl, less common waterbirds, or anything rare, and maybe you'll be immortalized in this little sidebar of history. Don't fret if you aren't sure if your observation was within the Cayuga Lake Basin. If you can describe the location well enough or place it accurately on an eBird report, we can probably figure that out. Here's to a brand new year of birding!--Dave Nutter -- Cayugabirds-L List Info: Welcome and Basics Rules and Information Subscribe, Configuration and Leave Archives: The Mail Archive Surfbirds BirdingOnThe.Net Please submit your observations to eBird! --

Re: [cayugabirds-l] Ross's Geese (Red-thr. Loon at Stewart)
Actually, at 9:54, he was still sleeping, if you can believe that. But later in the day he was sorting through geese as well -- at Stewart Park in preparation for tomorrow's CBC. Not much to be found, and very low numbers and diversity of waterfowl -- not boding too well for tomorrow. The lake was very calm however, and I did pick up 4 distant LOONS, one of which was a nice RED-THROATED -- these were along the west shore, north of the channel marker. Whoever is counting along the SW shore of Cayuga Lake tomorrow should watch for this bird -- I will be scanning from the lighthouse jetty and Stewart Pard, so we shoulc coordinate numbers.
