[cayugabirds-l] Osprey Hunting AMAZING FOOTAGE

2012-04-20 Thread Don

Birders---perhaps this has already made the rounds, but if you havent' seen
it, here's some great footage of osprey strikes.
Don T.

In the first sequence, he catches half a dozen fish in one strike.
In the second sequence, he plunges talons into deep water right to the
bottom to grab his prey.
In the third sequence, he captures a big old fat fish that looks as if it
weighs more than he does!

Incredible photography (best viewed in full screen mode)!

RE: RE: [cayugabirds-l] Northern Waterthrush

2012-04-20 Thread Meena Haribal
I did not mean average arrival in the basin. I had heard or seen the Northern
Waterthrush at Sapsucker wood on April 20, at least that is the date stuck to
my mind.

[cayugabirds-l] Next Monday Night Seminar at the lab

2012-04-20 Thread Jeff Gerbracht
Leo Douglas, a lecturer at Columbia University, with a strong interest
in Caribbean Bird Consevation, especially in his native country of
Jamaica, will be giving the Monday Night Seminar next Monday at
7:30pm. His talk will focus on his research in the Caribbean island
of Dominica and the use of the endemic Amazona parrots as flagship
species. Dominica has two beautiful endemic parrots and I'm looking
forward to hearing about their conservation efforts how successful the
"Flagship" concept has worked.

"Flagship or Battleship? Unintended consequences of the use of an
Amazona parrot as a conservation flagship in the Caribbean" by Leo
Douglas

It'll be a great talk and I encourage everyone to attend.

   Cheers,
 Jeff

[cayugabirds-l] Book Talk: Thurs. Apr. 26: "Interspecific Competition in Birds" with André Dhondt at Mann Library

2012-04-20 Thread Marty Schlabach

Please join us for a "Chat in the Stacks" with André Dhondt at Mann Library ...

Book Talk: Interspecific Competition in Birds
André A. Dhondt
Thursday, April 26 at 4:00pm
Mann Library, Room 160
Cornell University

One of the challenges of the future is to maintain biodiversity, and a very
large number of factors influence global biodiversity. By managing communities
in ecosystems, biodiversity can be maintained, and our feathered competitors
can teach ecologists a lot about species interactions. Join André A. Dhondt,
Edwin H. Morgens Professor of Ornithology at Cornell, for a "Chats in the
Stacks" talk about his new book "Interspecific Competition in Birds" (Oxford
University Press, January 2012).

In nature there exist three main types of biotic interactions between
individuals of different species: competition, predation, and mutualism. All
three exert powerful selection pressures, and all three shape communities.
However, the question of how important interspecific competition in nature
really is remains controversial and unresolved. This book provides a critical
review of the topic, and reasons that the coexistence of species is the result
of both past and presently on-going interspecific competition. Understanding
the importance of interspecific competition in natural systems will be
increasingly important when modeling the effects of climate change on
populations.

A reception and book signing will follow. The "Chats in the Stacks" book talk
is funded by the Mary A. Morrison Public Education Fund at Mann Library. For
more information, please call 255-5406 or visit
http://mannlib.cornell.edu/events-exhibits.

[cayugabirds-l] Shindagin Least Flycatcher

2012-04-20 Thread Anne Marie Johnson
I walked along the road in the bottom of the hollow this morning and heard
a persistently calling Least Flycatcher. Otherwise it was fairly quiet
except for two kingfishers flying and calling up and down the creek south
of Gulf Creek Road, an Eastern Towhee, a Hermit Thrush, and loads of robins
and juncos. Noticeably absent were the two Louisiana Waterthrushes I saw at
the intersection of Shindagin Hollow Road and Gulf Creek Road last week.
Last year a Louisiana Waterthrush sang from this location well into the
summer. There were three Wood Ducks on the pond, and along the road down
into the hollow I heard several Winter Wrens.

[cayugabirds-l] Bluebird interlopers

2012-04-20 Thread Caroline Manring
There was a pair of chickadees building a nest in a box on my house that
has a camera in it-- for nine days they worked on it, and the last three
nights one of them has been sleeping in it (presumably the female?).

Now two bluebirds want the real estate. They fussed over and around it
yesterday, sometimes getting whacked in the face by a chickadee torpedo
from inside. Last night, it seemed the chickadees had prevailed, since one
slept in the box. Today, so far, the bluebirds seem to be meeting no
resistance from within or without, and often get in the box together and
vocalize.

My grandmother had the exact same thing happen in her nestbox cam last year
with the same two species. In her case, the bluebirds won and the
chickadees moved into a nearby box.

Are bluebirds generally opportunistic?

What will the chickadees do with whatever egg is brewing in the female if
the bluebirds win? It took them nine days to make their first nest...
