[cayugabirds-l] late, second-hand Yellow-throated Warbler

2012-09-02 Thread nutter.dave
I learned this evening that my friend Stefhan Ohlström, who lives near Eco-Village on Ithaca's West Hill, saw a YELLOW-THROATED WARBLER in his yard earlier this week. Of course I double-checked whether he meant Common Yellowthroat, as mixing up the names is common. He meant what he said, describing it as "like a Black-and-white Warbler with a yellow bib". --Dave Nutter

[cayugabirds-l] Fall Creek near Stewart Park

2012-09-02 Thread cl...@juno.com
Via canoe this afternoon, we had great fun watching three belted kingfishers as
they flew back and forth over the still water of Fall Creek. After sighting two
great blue herons, a green heron flushed out of the reeds and stood preening
just 20 feet away for over 10 minutes [note to self: 2 kids and a camera in a
canoe = unfocused pix]. Overhead an osprey also flew up and down the waterway.
7-8 rock doves huddled and pecked in the dirt under the train and Rt. 13
bridges.
Once on the southern edge of the lake, Canada geese, mallards, d-c cormorants,
Caspian tern, and three sp. of gulls dominated the scene.
A great way to spend a couple of hours on a beautiful day.

Sorry Mark-- Our Albert Podell is Cornell '58. I have met him, and that photo

The Podell Boardwalk is named for Albert Podell. I know nothing specific about
his association with the Lab, but it seems likely that he is the same guy
featured in this article.

A Google search reveals more interesting info about the estimable Mr. Podell.
Evidently he is not only a Lab supporter and a defiantly principled chooser of
lifestyle and bed linens -- he is also a generous supporter of other charitable
causes, a patron of the arts, a world traveler, filmmaker, and author. I gotta
give the guy credit – and not just because his namesake boardwalk is such a
good place to find birds.

Alas, I didn’t check there this morning, but I did find a few migrants
elsewhere in Sapsucker Woods – a female CANADA WARBLER by the Charley Harper
memorial bench, a NORTHERN WATERTHRUSH at the pond edge here, and a
BLACK-THROATED GREEN WARBLER in the woods close to the Fuller Wetlands.

Greetings, Birders!

Many of you post of sightings at the Podell Boardwalk here at the Lab. An
elderly visitor of the same last name is keen to know for whom is it named? I
have combed our website and the internet for the information and not finding
anything, and I thought perhaps some of you have been part of the Lab or
birding here since before said Boardwalk was created may know.

Many Thanks,

holly

[cayugabirds-l] Sunday birds--warblers, Red Crossbills, LBBGull

2012-09-02 Thread Jay McGowan
Hi all,
I birded at the Park Preserve on Irish Settlement Road for a few hours
this morning with a briefer stop at the Durland Preserve on Ellis
Hollow Creek Road. Highlights from Park were a plethora of warblers,
including CAPE MAY, BAY-BREASTED, BLACKPOLL, TENNESSEE, WILSON'S,
Nashville, Magnolia, Chestnut-sided, Black-throated Blue,
Black-throated Green, Yellow-rumped, Black-and-white, Common
Yellowthroat, and Ovenbird. Other birds here included a spontaneously
calling EASTERN SCREECH-OWL in the spruces, BARRED OWL in the ravine,
and one PHILADELPHIA VIREO. Activity had quieted down substantially by
8:30 or so.

Durland Preserve was fairly quiet around 10:00. No sign of the
Olive-sided, but I only waited 15 minutes or so. Highlight here were
two RED CROSSBILLS (sounded like Type 3, which is what I think the
ones I had in my yard last week were as well). They flew over quite
low (tree top level) just inside the preserve, heading east (so
basically flying along Ellis Hollow Creek Road.) Looks like this may
be a good season for Red Crossbills. Ben Barkley reported flyover
WHITE-WINGED CROSSBILLS from campus last weekend as well, although I
have not heard a follow-up to that report.

Finally, a small 2nd or 3rd cycle LESSER BLACK-BACKED GULL found
yesterday by Kevin McGowan was still present at the Cornell compost
facility off Stevenson Road just now.

Good birding,
-Jay

[cayugabirds-l] Birds in the Yard

2012-09-02 Thread Susan Fast
This morning, about 0900, after my coffee break and before starting in on
the house painting, I thought to check my yard for new birds. Found some
migrants.

Magnolia warblers 10-12

Black-throated green3-4

Nashville1

Wilson's2

Mourning 1

House wren 2

In addition, last evening at 1830, an OSPREY floated over the house, headed
south. The osprey, mourning, and Wilson's are new Yard birds.
